What do you think of Tesla cars?

Lets hear it... owned one? thought of buying, test driven. what's your view.

Test drove: I wanted to like it, but so much I did not like. Given the other factors of... they don't go as far on a charge as lied in the information, not as good in the cold, if battery damaged it's an explosive hazard and last but not least... very expensive.. I'm not interested.

Cost of replacement batteries. . . non-availability of charging stations. . . not feasible for long-distance trips. . . totally wrong if I must evacuate my location and drive inland. . . these are enough reasons to not want an EV as my primary vehicle.

emergency evac from florida strikes me as huge risk. as soon as they start dying on the roadside and clogging passage ways in a hurricane, it big a big problem. no way to recharge fast.

My dad drives one. It's pretty amazing. He had solar panels on the roof of his home and charges the car in his garage using the power from the pannels, so he literally has no fuel expense with it.

It has the same limitations of any other electric car, meaning it's not great for long trips. Charging it is slow. But he has a truck he uses for longer drives. The Tesla is just for cummuting to work and driving around town, and he loves it for that. I've driven it a few times and I love it too.

that setup makes some sense, cost be quite low to operate. I don't handle bluetooth EMF and so I was instantly felt bad in each car I drove. maybe it can be turned off. The other issue I noticed was the strong engine braking which I could get used to, but didn't' care for. might save on brakes.

@lightbulb27 the electric current is what makes the wheels spin. It's impossible to shut off while the car is running and there can be no 100% efficiency to not leak EMFs, you can only isolate yourself from a significant portion of it with a layer of metal.

It's largely the Chinese EVs that are catching on fire. Teslas catching on fire is so rare that every time it happens, it makes the national news - but even then, much of the time, it's some other brand and the news calls it a Tesla. About 9 months ago, our local news was talking about a Tesla fire, and on the video, it was a Polestar that had crashed into the garage of a house at high speed and punctured the battery on the concrete foundation of the garage. Polestar is a Chinese brand that's part of the Volvo group - Volvo is majority Chinese ownership these days.

The concept itself is good but the actual practicality of electric automobiles in 2024 leave much to be desired. Generally speaking their performance is subaverage for reasons you've just mentioned.

For me however I have privacy concerns and I believe, that some automobiles like Tesla's might be Facebook on wheels. I put a heavy emphasis on the "might be" part this time.

I have a Model S and will never drive an ICE car again, as long as I can avoid it.

I have over 100,000 miles on mine, never have or even thought of replacing the battery as the battery has nearly the same range as when I bought it.

There are Super Chargers all over the planet, Europe included. I charge at home, have, Solar and a Tesla storage Battery in my home. My state has Super Chargers literally everywhere, and never drive very far to find one (If I need it)

I can drive cross country with no problem as I have good Range on my car and I usually stop every 2-3 hours to use the bathroom or get coffee, snacks etc

The usual 'down side' comments by others are - from my POV - baseless- based on my driving 104,00 miles in my Model S

If you use a household outlet it would take you 2 days to charge a tesla lol. You could install a 220-volt outlet and it would cut it to a short 12 hours lol. Seems to me people that buy Tesla's only do it to show off just like people buy the latest iPhone. Your not even helping the environment much by driving a tesla because producing those tesla batteries causes lots of pollution. In conclusion, i would never buy a tesla lol im too cheap and i don't have the patience to be charging it for half of my day and worrying about something catching fire as it pulls a lot of watts too.

You are assuming that every single time you come home, you are rolling up your driveway with 1% energy remaining - that's not how it works in the real world. Most people would, in fact, do just fine with only a 110V outlet at home, because most people only need to add 30-40% charge every day. That said, it's not that hard or that expensive for most homeowners (apartments are a different story) to install a 220V outlet, and that pretty much solves the problem.

How often do you have to fill up your gas car more than once in a day? For most people, that's maybe a couple of times per year, when they're on a long trip. Of course there are a few exceptions, but I'm talking about how the vast majority of people use their car. For those people, they literally NEVER wait to charge their car - they just plug in when they get home and they never have to think about it at all.

It's true that Li batteries burn very hot and are hard to put out, but gasoline cars are 22 times more likely to catch on fire compared to EVs (not just Teslas, but all EVs, many of which have crappy batteries). It's just that it's relatively common, people are used to it, so it doesn't get reported. Anytime ANY EV has anything bad happen to it, anywhere in the world, Tesla is blamed.

Teslas are nice and expensive toys but ever 10yo. Toyota, Honda or Mazda drives from A to B with zero battery loading stops and doesn't give their owners heart attack when they see workshop bills.

I don't know how it looks in US but in EU Tesla doesn't sell cars over independent dealers like most other car brands. It means those independent dealer workshops don't get tools, software and documentation to repair a Tesla and official dealerships demand scam prices for work hours of their mechanics.

The concept is ok if you can see past the whole environment disaster of mining the battery components and pollution from transporting the raw materials for processing.

Not forgetting the inconvenience of not being able to refill the tank in 2 minutes and then drive 400 miles at a time in the cold. And the fire hazard.

Put a petrol engine in it and I'd love one.

For the most part they look good. Sleek and modern. They are quite fast and surprisingly nimble.

I don't like the idea of literally everything on it being computerized right down to the door handles.

I don't like the idea of having a TV instead of a dashboard. Knobs and switches you can use by feel without taking your eyes off the road. That's hard to do with touchscreen. You can't feel where the options are and I don't want to have to navigate essentially a video game menu just to turn the radio on.

Overall I do not like them enough to consider buying one.

As well as the car was made, and despite its many innovations (most NOT related to batteries), I will never have an electric vehicle. The only really logical way to use electric motors in a car is to have small booster motors for acceleration, and ICEs when you are up to speed. Motors as more torquey and efficient "off the line", and ICEs are much more efficient when cruising. But as my only source of power, forgetaboutit.

I’ve never drove a Tesla myself but I’ve been in a couple. They’re really nice inside. Never really cared to own one though.

However if I did own one, I probably wouldn’t use the self driving feature cause I don’t trust it.

yes they break down in floods and snow, any slight change in the terrain can cause it to go haywire, that's why I'll always drive trucks, they'll never let you down, bumps they got it, weather conditions not a problem, I'll be a truck girl forever
