Do computer programmers go blind sooner than others at desk jobs?

There are probably very few people who have stared at a computer as long as I have. I have no idea how much time I've spent looking at computers, but it may be 100K hours, possibly more than that.

I do think it negatively affects the eyes, but I have no way prove that. I'm not a programmer, but the kind of work I did was almost certainly harder on the eyes. I'm also a gamer and I think a lot of games are very hard on the eyes.

Bottom line is that you are using your eyes for something they weren't designed for. I think it's important to take regular breaks and go outside to let your eyes look at a distance for a while.

I really don't see why programming would be worse than a lot of other things people do on computers. A lot of programmers work in semi-dark, but that's because it's easier on the eyes. I work in the semi-dark at home, and some of the companies I worked for also had the lights off for the CAD people.

I prefer a dark background with light text. When I used CAD, it almost always had a black background.

As for myself, I have some weird eye problems that not many people have. I don't even remember the name of it, but it really messes with my focus and affects the two eyes unevenly which causes a lot of stress doing certain things on computers. For me, taking regular breaks isn't optional, it's mandatory. It gets to the point that I can't even look at the screen any more.

I am a design engineer which I have my eyes 👀 glue to that monitor for 8 to 10 hour days Monday through Friday. I have to get up from my desk every hour for approximately 10 to 15 minutes and focus on something else, besides the monitors. It might be a toss-up with people going blind.

I stare at screens all day, my vision is perfect. Bad eyes is from other causes, not screens.

I was taking online courses for programming. I have to wear glasses at certain times. I was told it's from staring at a bright screen in the dark. So now I have to wear glasses when looking at a TV, computer screen, or driving at night.

I would say no. Possulibly in the past, but right now (I work in that field by the way) I wear glasses. Prescription glasses, that also filter out blue light and make staring at screens all day less of a pain in the ass.

Good ergonomic vision care while using a computer is important and recommended. I practice it, because computers are critical to my work.
