I’ve got an iPhone SE (1st gen). Basically, a tiny 6s. It’s fine for daily use. The speed isn’t too bad. So, an iPhone 7 should still be viable. If you have a very limited budget.

if possible. I’d get an iPhone XR/XS. If possible. They are still quite fast and have the latest iOS. I’m using the XS. I also have the latest iPad mini. Which has the iPhone 13 CPU. With my basic usage. I really can’t tell a difference speed wise. Between the newer and older CPU.

i also have an old Pixel XL and Pixel 3. The XL is sluggish but the 3 is still pretty good.

Never cared for the Samsung UI. If getting an older phone. I’d stick with iPhone. Apple supports OS updates much longer and a good quality replacement battery is easier to find.

When my old Samsung Galaxy S6 finally bit the dust, I just ordered a refurb S9 from Backmarket for $120. Flagship model from a few years back, works like new, and I won't be too bummed if it falls out of my pocket at work and gets broken.
