How do you use Apple Wallet Apple Pay to pay for things at stores with your iPhone?

I have downloaded Apple Wallet, and was able to add my debit card to this app. However, I'm confused about how to use it in stores or restaurants. I'm in Japan now, and I'm not even sure you can use it to pay for things, but I can try. Has anyone ever used this to pay for things abroad? Please tell me how it works. Thanks.

By the way, I have an iPhone 14 with an E-sim card, not a regular SIM card in it. Sim is not an actual physical chip or card.

It’s really quite simple , it allows you to store your card virtually instead of having it physically. Downside is that there low ceilings on amounts allowed. You add the cards you want to the wallet. From a locked position , tap power button twice , select the card you want to use , security is usually passcode or face from setup as a form of 2FA once fulfilled you tap your phone on the card reader if it’s supported. That’s it


Why debit card though? I only use credit for purchases ( security , cash back , no currency fee etc )

I have both credit and debit cards on it. I’d rather pay with debit so I don’t overspend but I have used the credit one too.

PS my debit card does have security on it. At home I use it with no problem, they know I’m traveling now, so if I were to lose the physical card, I could report it and they would cancel it immediately or decline transactions if someone found ( or stole) it?

Ah ok fair , was just curious. I spend on credit and pay back full amount every month on statement. This year past I have earned over £900 by using credit. I know it’s a small amount but not insignificant.

I never leave a balance on my cards either, and only use them for large purchases. I pay them before any balance is due. Yes, I have that 3% cash back on credit, so that if I have a balance, I apply it towards the card and then pay the rest.

Tap where? Thats what's confusing to me. With mine you have to click the right side button twice.
PS I was able to make 2 purchases at two convenience stores, so I got it. I just can't do the vending machines where you have to do that tapping.

You hit the power bottom twice and it’ll prompt you. If you have a passcode, it say

You enter your password then just tap on the machine like you would a card

The problem is, I don’t know how or where to tap. I click the side button twice and then do the face recognition thing, and then try holding the phone close or tapping the phone on the machine.
This was at a vending machine. It worked twice for me. But I’m hoping it will be easier at a restaurant or a store. For example, a convenience store.

Most machines allow you to tap on screen. Other machines have a tap function at the top.

I always use apple pay. Double click on the right side of my phone and that's it. Pretty convenient and simple.

You don’t have to tap it anywhere, or hold it over a screen of a machine to pay? How does it work at a convenience store?

Yes, double click on the right hand side of your phone and then keep your iPhone close to the ATM machine for the payment to go through. As long as the store has a wireless/contactless ATM machine payment you're good to go

Yes it does! At convenience stores like 7-11, Family Mart, Don Quixote shops and anywhere you see the WiFi symbol near the cash registers where you pay. You can also use a Suica card at many shops, and on the metro. You can charge them up with cash at various machines.

Ps by the way, you wouldn’t believe all the foods sold at convenience stores here. The American dollar is strong now so you pay very little for meals in bowls at the stores. I even bought sushi. Sandwiches are so great. So oishii! Delicious

You want a credit card linked not a debit. Debit has liquid cash that is easier to steal and banks are less likely to get the money back.

Ah, I can “lock” my card and unlock it again when I make purchases. Also, my debit card and credit card companies always send me email messages asking if I made a purchase greater than a certain amount, in case of fraud.

You tap your phone where it says tap. I think you have to have your phone unlocked.
