What is the point of using social media in the first place?
Sites like facebook are useless in my opinion.

Video hosting sites, online gaming platforms, and question and answer sites have their uses, but sites where the only point is talking to people are just obsoleted by phones, game chat, instant messengers, etc.

Why would I want to be bombarded with what everyone I know is doing every day? (let alone while being spammed with ads, rants, politics, and sjw posts), when I could just text someone and not have to deal with any of that.

Having actual relationships with people instead of the shallow crap people post. Life's messy. Unless you followed my video series I posted in 2020 when I was in ICU fighting Covid and other people's similar things, most users - especially younger ones - try to project a perfect existence. That's why suicide rates are climbing.

I did this. My Instagram is still deactivated two years later. Why? I was pregnant and working full time and didn’t have the time or energy to continue posting anything, so I deactivated it. After I gave birth, I was diagnosed with postnatal depression, and I was dealing with a lot of family drama and fallouts. In the end, I completely forgot about my deactivated account until last month.

So being depressed is a cause of deactivating social media?

It can be for some. Postnatal depression is hell to go through especially when it robs you of forming a bond with your baby. I wanted to end my life when times got dark.

I quit social media back in 2019. I’m a lot happier because I’m not constantly comparing my life to other people’s. People make more of an effort to get in contact with me and remember my birthday. It’s interesting how my social life went up when my social media went out.

Multiple reasons. It can be they’re going through dilemmas or mental health challenges with social media while taking time away to just focus on themselves. But the underline reason is to mostly find peace within themselves and focus on whatever it is their goals are.

If you have to walk away from something when there's a tough time in your life, then it shouldn't be there in the first place. So if you go through a rough patch and have to withdraw from social media so you can "focus on yourself" (🙄) then it's clearly something that isn't beneficial to you so why would you ever go back to it?

It’s not black and white, I can’t speak for everyone and each circumstance will be different. Some people may never return to a particular social media. Some people may take breaks and return when they feel ready or desire to do so. Some people might managed their time better with the healthy vs unhealthy use of social media lol.

Personally in my experience, I just take breaks to isolate myself until I feel better about whatever I was going through rather it was a break up, depression, etc.

But then again, I’m not really a big social media person like I used to be either lol. I prefer to just enjoy my life most of the time. I am barely ever use GAG when I am “active” here too.

    Retrain your brain.
The research on the effects of long term frequent use of social media is actually frightening. Kids today don’t care for the same reason kids fifty years ago didn’t care about the warnings against smoking.
They haven’t developed the necessary cognitive function to meaningfully weigh the benefits against the risks. This is where good parents would step in, but we’ve basically outlawed those. So, “Smoke up, Johnny!”, you’re gonna live forever! Ell oh ell!

Social media is a complete waste of time and doesn't enhance your life in any shape or form. I quit ALL social media 5 years and I haven't missed it for a second. Being on here is enough time-wasting for me.

The point as I see it is, personaly, I went through a bit of a rough patch over the last year or so. If I had been keeping up on social media, it would have destroyed me. I have taken the time and gotten back into it.

    To disconnect from the toxicity.
Social media really is bad. There should be a timeout for everybody after X amount of hours.

Because people have goals in life and social media is a distraction. I don't have instagram to protect my mental health.
