Most inventions are trials and errors of things that we wants. For example, drones. Frank Wang (Chinese billionaire who found a market through drone)
People became curious and fascinated with the ability to take quality videos from the sky. He saw the market for it and trial and tested his way up. Think how big the drone market is today.

An inventor invents things by imagining the idea and figuring out what it might be used for. The next step is looking at other designs which may or may not be similar, getting more ideas (or narrowing them down). Lots of drawings ensue. Then the practicalities come in to help your project take physical shape, the materials, size, weight, strength, etc. Finally, trial and error. No one creates something that works without failing at least once, unless they're really lucky. I hope this helped! :)

As for the kind of mind, the person would need to be willing to take on feedback, improve and have enough of knowledge about mechanics, maths and science.

Most of the useful inventions were thought of in the 70s (thanks to all the money taxing the rich poured into public education in the 50s). These days inventions consist pretty much entirely of improvising or improving on those inventions from the 70s.

They just copy write it. They don't even have to make it or for the product to work. Just fill out the paper work and you invented something.

Invention has more to do with creativity than intelligence. Most inventors start by identifying a need and inventing a way to met that need.
