It's been years since I've seen a plastic pocket protector, but it was designed to slip into your shirt pocket and hold your ink pens. Geek fashion dictated that you not only have a plastic pocket protector, but also have multiple pens tucked into it.

I’m guessing the pocket protector because the slide rule has been around for a long time and I doubt it was the calculator or the digital watch

It was a process of elimination. I knew it was not the calculator or the digital watch. The slide rule was out as well because the inventor lived before there was ham radio.

Gerson Strassberg claimed to invent the pocket protector, but history proves otherwise.

Hurley Smith invented the pocket protector. He filed for a patent on June 3, 1943 and was awarded US patent 2417786A on March 18, 1947. Gerson Strassberg didn't claim to be the inventor until 1952.
