What do you think about the tipping culture in US?

It annoys the snot out of me, and for two primary reasons: the first is obvious enough; if you don't charge enough to pay your employees a decent wage, you need to charge more. I don't even like it that listed prices don't include taxes; but here's ANOTHER fee on top of that, that you don't tell me about beforehand? Here in the US, the standard in restaurants is 15%. Okay, fair enough; that's widespread knowledge. But 1. that's supposed to be for good service, not as a default, and 2. there are DOZENS of other businesses that expect tipping, that nobody tells you about and you only find out when someone gets offended. This world is trying to turn me into Bob Cody.

The second reason is that it's spreading. In a restaurant that waits your table, cooks your food to order, and cleans your table, I can see the point, but I've encountered tip jars in McDonald'ses, that do NONE of those things. I've even seen tip jars placed in the middle of drive-through windows, that make it more difficult for staff to do their jobs, since they have to reach around them.
Charge what you have to charge, say what you mean, and mean what you- dangit. I don't even know where to BUY dynamite!
I grew up with tipping so it's normal to me. But it's gotten out of hand. A lot of people blame the employers for not paying enough, but it's actually the customers who cause the problem. People tip more and more, to the point that the employees expect it.
When I was young, servers got approximately 10%. Then they changed it was 15%. Then 20%. Now it's common to give 25-30%. The employees aren't even asking for that much, but people give it to them anyway.
On top of that, a lot of jobs that weren't tipping jobs in the past, now expect tips. It's just gotten crazy. And it's the people leaving those big tips who are at fault. Just stop doing it. I'm not against tipping for some things, but it' needs to be reasonable.
It's not the employers fault. It's the fault of the tippers who continually up the ante.
I don't know about America specifically, but I think the tip system abroad is not very good, because as far as I heard, employers give the salary less to the employee so that less money comes out of their pockets and leave the rest to the tip. This is unnecessarily burdening the citizens. I don't think so.
A person can leave a tip if they want to, but there can be no coercion for this, I have heard of multi-percentage tips as well as a small percentage tip requirement, and I know the complaints about them. These have even been covered in movies.
In other words, it should be left to the customer's choice, the employer should be generous in taking money out of his pocket and there should be no coercion on the subject.
People are not told, "If you want it to be free, if you want a waiter to bring it to the table, this is the price".
I don't care about the salary of the employee you hired into the workplace because you don't want to work yourself.
It’s funny this questions comes up… just yesterday a colleague and I grabbed a quick dinner after a long day of finalizing a big project. The service was pretty bad, but the standard tip by me is 20%, so when the bill came ($40 w/o tip) I put down my card for my half and the other person put down $20 cash. I asked her to put my half on the card… and would have added the normal $8 on my card rather than ask my colleague to hand over her $4. 🙄
The server took the cash as her tip and charged the full $40 to my card! So we called her back over bc a 50% tip wasn’t what either of us had budgeted for! She looked at us with this surprises look on her face… SMH.
The tip jar situation is a little different at places where you see someone is busting their * taking orders and generating a ton of orders. I tend to be kind when leaving a tip in the jar, esp. at places where I’m a regular.

It sucks. That being said please tip your waiters at least 20% and in non-seated situations (i. e fast food etc 10%), especially your Doordash drivers and Lyfts 20% at least. Anyone who’s ever worked a tip job can tell you you live off of the tips alone pretty much. The tipping culture in the us unfortunately exists, and for a racist reason, it still exists and by not tipping, you’re depriving someone of money for food. As a former driver, food service worker, and delivery girl, you are becoming the type of person that contributes to people not going to the doctor, skipping meals, and much more.
Ehh I would say pressuring local (city and county/parrish/regional administrative) governments through disruption is the best way, followed by supporting unionization and pressuring local businesses that aren’t corporate
It’s out of control.
It used to be waitresses got tipped because they made less then minimum wage so their wage was supplemented with tips for doing a good job. It’s not that way anymore. Many places they share tips so the lazy make as much as the hard workers. No more incentive to do a good job. And of course now everyone has their hand out for a tip.
I was born here and when I was old enough to learn that tipping culture is an American thing I became instantly jealous of all the European countries that don’t tip. Being expected to tip is so annoying, sure it’s sometimes nice when you’re the worker getting tipped but a lot of the times tips get shared so you don’t even really get the full tip & that’s also annoying.
It has gotten WAY outta hand.
It doesn’t help that there are knuckleheads who resist the idea of making all employers pay a living wage so that tipping isn’t a source of fundamental income for the working poor. Somehow we don’t owe people a living wage unless THEY deem them worthy, but we DO owe the decriers a $1 cheeseburger? Ell oh ell! Fuckwits.
Tipping is out of control. A lot of that was due to the launch of a software company about 8 years ago which makes money on the tips so they are the ones who provide it to near every company including people putting on your tires and they are also the ones who up the percentage to 30% and have you sign in front of the workers.
The owner of the software company is a billionaire of course and getting richer.
Its a good idea for it allows people who can afford it to give more, as well as incentivizes good service provided you pay the tip after Not before the meal.
That said I'm not sure its does much beyond indicating your wealth when you tip upfront.
I'd prefer it to be an extra thing, as in, I don't want to feel responsible for a waiter's bills getting paid. They should be paid fairly at cost to the business owners, and tips should be optional as a thank you for service. Of course, that's not currently the case. I think it sucks and it'd be nice to see it fixed, but that's not going to happen in greed land. So for now I just head in expecting to pay a few extra dollars on top of whatever the menu says I'm supposed to pay.
I don't disagree with this. Here's the thing though. Restaurants will increase their prices to be able to pay them without taking out of their current profits. If we let them do that they will say they need to increase prices 50% so they can cover added social security tax and make up stuff to make themselves victims somehow. I say it is cheaper to continue to pay 20% and leave it as is. Give the restaurants a reason to and they'll exaggerate how much higher food will cost to pay their folks. It's favored by career bartenders in many places to keep as is based on friends and family in service industry.
This is just my opinion however.
Dont give tips. Its businesses own problem to pay for their employees. If they can't then they should close the doors - because it is not sustainable. In Europe we dont have that. Yeah you can tip but its not mandatory
https://www.youtube.com/embed/dLVbWhLqGogI hate it. It gives business a reason to give dirt low wages to employees. In some companies, it doesn't matter who gets tips, they just have to pool them together. It also is horrible for work ethic as employees will ignore tables that don't look like they will tip well or have a just a 1 to 2 people at the table. (Dealt with that on mother's day. No one would wait on us or come to even take the empty plates. It took at least 1 older employee to notice we haven't been waited on the entire time)
I travel to many places and tipping is not the norm. Australia for example usually pays accordingly and tipping is not expected. I do not think any employee should require tips to make a living wage.
It's gotten ridiculous. It used to be 15% for good service. Sort of an incentive. Now it's 20-25% just because they showed up at work, even of the service is terrible. And everyone thinks they should get a tip for everything. It's a racket.
It’s established. And it would be near impossible to retract.
If you can tip, know it goes to someone who lives off it. And their employer has a hard enough time paying for the business which employs them.
So there’s an arguable working cycle.
I don't think tipping should be expected.
It should be up to to the employers and company to pay the employees properly.
We're already giving the companies business by eating there in the first place, so they shouldn't expect more.
It's stupid. I'm not paying your wages, on top of paying for my food and my service. Want more money? Get a better job or campaign to be paid hourly as opposed to low rates plus tips
I've been called cheap because my country doesn't force consumers to pay the wages of minimum wage workers. A lot of Americans are so used to tipping that they don't see the flaws in it
Another reason to dislike parts of the American economy. Just don’t pay your slave workers a living wage and hope that the general public comes to their rescue. 🤦♂️
I try to avoid places that ask for tips. They either need to include tips in the prices or reduce the prices if customers are handling all the overhead.
Zero tip, unless you are ordering online, then about 15%.
When you go to a restaurant, YOU take a seat. YOU order your drink. YOU order your food. YOU ask for the check. If anything, 20% should be taken out of the servers paycheck.
Remember, I am kind, NOT POLITE. There is a difference. I do not donate to charity.
Well either tip good or pay more for the meal. I think by tipping good your night out is less expensive. Also you get better and friendly service. Plus if you tip well it makes you 👀?
I know that it has changed in the US. However, I have not changed my tipping culture. I tip my waitress and my barber. I refuse to leave a tip at a convenience store or a take out place.
I think it's ridiculous. People should be paid a fair livable wage and tipping should be an optional bonus
I hate it. It makes the business problems my problems. Pay your damn employees!
I always tip especially at strip clubs and bars they barely have a wage
I tip for service... when there is service; takeout does not normally get a tip
I prefer the tipping culture in Asian countries. Non existent. Tipping is an insult because they get paid properly
Can someone do something about it? its out of control. Im getting more broke even im making more money now
Absolutely ridiculous. Especially with pick up and drive through orders?
yes in full service restaurants, no wherever there's a cup at the counter
Employers go cheap on the wage expecting the general public or tourism to pay the differences I gotta pay for you for public courtesy? Isn't that your service part of any job you b work at?
It's bullshit. The liberals have infected everything. More money for less work. Typical.
Germane only to Americans, as tipping is unknown in Europe owing to (I think) hospitality staff's higher wages.
It got outta hand when they started asking people to tip their landlord in paying rent like absolutely phuckin not🤨 ! I’m leaving tips to waiters and bartenders tf.
i think it's a criminal scheme to scam waiters out of being paid a living wage.
I don't like it. It's an employers responsibility to pay their employees. Tipping should be completely voluntary.
I understand it is customary, But you are still rating someone and you shouldn't be forced to tip someone.
A lot of folks don't tip. I tip based on the service.
It's a sham. Pay your employees! Tipping should be voluntary
Against it.
It's not the customers obligation to pay extra
It's fantastic. A great way for a stupid person to make a good living without paying taxes.
dumb. just pay living wages
People should stop doing it on mass.
And personally I find delivery driver tipping the most offensive one we do have in Europe. You drove a 5 minute trip from A to B to deliver me food. Whats special about it? What service did you do so extremely well that it deserves extra money? It's not difficult to drive from A to B. I'd be solving immensely complex computer issues for someone who can't do their job the entire day if I didn't spend so much effort on fixing it, do I get a tip? Of course not, I get paid a salary. My job is way more difficult than their job and its not expected that I get tipped, so why would I have to tip anyone for anything but exceptional service?
I'm happy I don't have to deal with that.
It has definitely run amok.
Cow tipping in the South? We like it.
it sucks. We should do away with it.
Their employer needs to pay them not me
It’s become out of hand
Bad capitalism.
We dont have that here in Finland and thats good.
I need bigger tips 💰
Too many places want tips.
Out of control!
It's fine. I support it.
WAY WAY WAY out of hand
Outs getting out of hand
Tipping is a large part of our economy.
Scam
it could be
too much now
