I am very patriotic, but that doesn’t mean the US is a perfect country.
Like every other landmass with humans on it, the US has had a bloody history. A bloody history, filled with all manners of evil, depravity, sickness, etc.
We are talking about humans here.
Even today, in modern times, the US has faults.
In this case, I think certain bits of the popular culture here can be damning to future generations of Americans.
I’ll name a few things but won’t really go in-depth into them right now
•Over-reliance/obsession over social media and social media’s celebrities •Pornography (the buyers and sellers) •Weak men •Weak women •Political correctness •Unreasonable & excessive coddling of women •Softening of men •More people standing by and watching, doing nothing in the face of some emergency or horrific event (many a times, further instigate or fan the flame of this event). •Inability to have a conversation with opposing viewpoints
Some of these can be redundant and of course this isn’t all super specific to only people of the US.
I’m simply writing what’s on my head at the moment
What are some things wrong with US culture? How dangerous is this for the future of the country?
OK. Well from a non citizen looking in perspective, I'll make few comments from the firm opinion that every country has deficiencies and less than desirable aspects to it. At base we are all people with human flaws as said.
First though a major upside. For the third time the US is resolutely opposing nasty dictators with Imperialist ambitions. Sadly the world does not give the US anywhere near enough credit or even support in this. It is quite disgusting really. The world needs the US to continue as it has been. Ukraine has been a wake up call.
What might I be worried about and if I did have a magic wand where might I wave it?
To be honest I don't think you guys do yourselves any favors by categorizing yourselves into races. You are all Americans and, more than most countries, adopt and assimilate people from all over the world very well. To an outsider, to categorize into white/hispanic/black/Asian seems to potentially damage your "we are all Americans" concept. On the other hand I dislike intensely the coy Australian approach of "A man of other/African/Asian appearance was seen walking away".
Do you know China has a demographic time bomb thanks to their one child policy? There are a lot of older Chinese people getting to the end of their working life and not so many coming after them. It is the case for a lot of countries but the US is one of the few who doesn't. In part because it is so attractive for immigrants.
But it isn't enough to have lots of workers. You need smart workers for a country to be wealthy. Education seems very expensive in the US (maybe I'm wrong) and the more expensive it is the fewer that can afford it and fewer smart workers there are. You might think about not wasting your human resources. But you also need jobs for the not so smart workers. Every country has to rethink supply chain not just the US.
The final one affects all western countries. Increasingly there is a left vs right divide with hatred on both sides. I have no idea how we can get out of that one.
1. The MSM is heavily biased and has renounced their history of being reporters of the news. They now see their job as being an adjunct to the Democrat party to advance the political platform of the left.
2. Public education is heaving controlled by teachers unions which have converted the primary mission to one of social and political indoctrination.
3. We have tended to dumb down things to a very low level and recognize mere participation instead of rewarding excellence in achievement.
4. There is a sense of entitlement to wokeness and heavy pressure to conform to PC thought.
5. We have drifted far away from the idea of individual responsibility and freedom to find one's way in life. Now, it is always someone else's responsibility to provide for us: jobs, housing, food, cell phones, internet access, birth control, etc.
1. Politics, and the notion that one has to "pick a side." Compromise used to mean both sides have to give up something (even grudgingly), but both sides come to a solution both can reasonably agree on. Now compromise seems to mean "bully the other side until they cave and I get my way."
2. Use of social media to vent spleen rather than writing legislators and engaging community leaders where some workable results might come from it, even if they are not perfect. See point 1, compromise.
Liberalsim Vastly over populated Over bloated government that vastly oversteps it's mandate Rampant apathy Crazy media Computers / video games / Internet Smart phones Sedentary lifestyle ( leading to both physical and mental issues ) People not knowing how to do things for themselves ( this is very wide ranging ) Priorities that are majorly messed up At the international level - not knowing how to mind their own damn business Same with the feds-state relationship - the feds not knowing how to mind their damn business Dependence on the government Being over educated ( referring specifically to formal education )
One of the biggest threats is that everything is politicised.
No matter what it is, people there seem to blame it on a political side or other.
Everything becomes a political football and nothing really gets done.
There is far to much credence given to a small percentage of extremes within politics, religion over there. Extremists have to much influence on things.
Also religion is too caught up in politics, watching from the outside this is noticeable over the years.
There seems to be a belief that the US must go back to what it was in 1850’s.
Every time one of the TWO parties is elected, the first thing that seems to happen is removing previous parties policies or stuff they put in place. It is a waste of effort, taxes, time etc, invariably it’s done purely from spite or malice or because it’s their policy.
I think it’s weird when there’s billionaires, people who have unimaginable amounts of wealth, like thousands of times more than most people will make in their entire lives, but people are super defensive about taxing them more. Like, 50% of 1 billion dollars is still an insanely opulent amount of wealth that anyone could live in luxury their entire lives on, but common people, people making 5 figures a year, will get like angry at the thought of the top.1% having way bigger taxes taken. Like the top 1% starts around $580,000 a year, and I’m not even talking about taxing those people more, I’m talking about the small group of individuals making many millions of dollars per year or even per month
- Pushing God out of public life and conversation - Self-indulgence/no self-control - Social media obsession - Celebrity obsession - Pornography - People not saving money - Minimalistic thinking - Politicization of everything - Prioritizing identity over merit - Abortion - Institutions (like the military) being influenced by the culture - Moderb feminism - Workaholism - Drama/reality TV - Grievance culture
1: God awful immigration and border policy that lets Rich Europeans enter the country and monopolize local industry, but won't let a Mexican mother see her children.
2: Embezzlement of public funds 100% Our worst problem and the root of all our other problems minus the border policy.
I think you can boil everything wrong with the US down to two fundamental categories: greed and ignorance. I’m open to anyone providing evidence to the contrary though.
The only thing wrong is, when U. S. culture is attempted to be exported to other places. As for everything else: shoot each other, 'fight' each other, exploit each other as much as you like, guys.
