Does anyone still use an old Apple iMac desktop computer?

This is probably a long shot because of how outdated it is, but how do you install Tiger or Snow Leopard on it if you have the discs for them? I got ahold of my grandfather's old flat screen iMac and want to see what is on it, such as iTune music or photos. I'm not sure if it was wiped clean but I can't get anything to work.

Do you have or have not the original OS discs? They are gray and easily overlooked. If you don't have them, you could buy a generic PowerPC MacOS 10.4 or 10.5 for little money. Is the machine booting at all?

I do have 6 or 7 discs with one being applications. I also have a Tiger and Snow Leopard disc. What exactly do all the gray discs do?

The gray discs are the specific OS discs for only that type of machine. If you have the G4 iMac in the picture, the newest OS you could install is Leopard (10.5). Snow Leopard (10.6) came out only for intel Macs. Is the machine booting or what happens when you press the power button?

I haven't tried using it for some time. I may break it out again and fiddle with it. I know it does have some iTunes folders on it somewhere. Just don't know how to find them.

You can see the current iTunes library path in the Preferences pane, when you are in iTunes. Then just open that path with Finder. Shoot me a DM if you run into problems.

You may be able to pull the hard drive out of it and read it using another computer.

I have seen those devices on Amazon where it will take different hard drives, like from a laptop or a desk top, or even digital camera data cards, and read what's on them. It just seemed kind of scammy to me.

I believe they work, although I have never tried one. Look for one with good reviews. You'll have to see what connections you require for the HD in your Mac before ordering. Be sure to get one you can return if it doesn't work.

Me either, until now. They were always too expensive for me.
