Do you prefer a female or a male voice on apps that give you directions?

I see people frequently using apps to get around by car or on foot, usually with a female voice-over. Maybe the creators of these apps thought that a female robotic voice has a soothing or comforting effect. But have you ever tried to disobey her? Intentionally going in the other direction? Or unintentionally missed an exit while driving because the distance she told you didn’t coincide with your human perception?

Maybe it’s just me, but after some weird sounds, I can hear a tone of despair and frustration in her voice when she has to recalculate the route. I envision her rolling her eyes and shaking her robotic head. Like saying 'See, you never listen to me'.

What do you think a male voice would add? Or would there be other traits and quirks associated with a robotic male voice? Would ‘he’ go silent for a long time, or just say ‘You’ve taken this route three times already, you should know by now’?

I don’t expect any serious answers to this question, so feel free to share your thoughts.

I prefer a female voice, I've listened to too many male voices in my life, and I'm single too.

But the problem is the AI female has all the human characteristics, they sometimes get lost and they don't know where they're going.

And that's not the worst of it, if you disobey her, she throws a wobbly just like a typical female and sends me in circles.

I know all her tricks now, so I try not to get on the wrong side of her.

Surprisingly we have a very good relationship, and I'm very pleased to have met her.

Yes, weird things can happen. Just yesterday, we needed to go to a place and I told my wife there were actually two different routes we could take, exit A or exit B, and follow either route into town. My wife said: let's see what the app says. The app told us first to take exit A, then at the last minute exit B. So I think she overheard us and got extremely jealous.

Well I can't really answer this question directly because I don't use apps for directions but I can give you an overall answer that applies to app voices in general and for me personally as long as the voice is pleasant it doesn't matter whether it's female or male.

I am partial to a man's voice not only giving me directions in my car, but also at sporting events, the news, singing among other things.

I just seem to pay attention more when I hear that masculine voice in my ears.

There's certainly something tangible in using road maps. I find it easier to envision the route towards my destination. Like a 3D-picture in my head.

But when in the car by myself and in a city I hardly know, an app can come in handy.
