Playing chess properly, is the sign someone is probably smart. It isn't the only factor, but a common one.

Also, chess is probably the most common game played in prisons around the world. Whereas lots of computer "gamers" are fuckwits with no partner or ambition in life, and will be struggling playing chess in prison...

Chess isn't complicated, but it's deep. Playing top level chess requires a lot of knowledge, and an ability to analyze positions for a few moves in advance.
