When you Think of Vietnam, What is the First Thing That Comes to Your Mind?

On September 2nd, 1945, the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam became its own independent Asian country. I've never been to Vietnam (but many people here in the USA have), but when I think of Vietnam, I think of Hanoi, the Vietnam War, humidity, rainforests, the song "I Feel Like I'm Fixin to Die" by Country Joe and the Fish, protests, the 1960s, and short people.

Well I grew up during the Vietnam War, and was the last year to sign up for the draft from that era. I grew up seeing the body count on the news every day. I grew up with all the other images surrounding it. It had a big influence on me that still persists. So it's kinda hard not to think of that.

I do think of other things, but the war is the reason I have such a strong memory and image of the place.

I think of the many Vietnamese friends I had when I was in school. I think of the Vietnam war, and the activism surrounding it. I think of how beautiful a country it is. I hope they are able to get rid of communism.

First thing? My college buddy's mom's cooking... holy christ. She was a culinary angel. Every time I was over there she would fatten me up like it was her job. Couldn't speak any English but showed her love with food. Amazing. God bless Vietnam.
