What’s it like living in a very homogeneous country?

For people from countries like that would you prefer to be in more diverse places?

I find it much easier to navigate socially here in Japan since, for example, what is considered rude/polite/cool/not cool is largely universal and easy to figure out. So it's very easy to get along with people here and make friends. I can also afford to be more polite with Japanese since it tends to be reciprocated. In the US, depending on the region, I had to learn to be quite aggressive and assertive at times like even flipping people off or speaking my most unfiltered thoughts.

I tend to prefer Japan mainly because of how easy I find the social navigation and befriending people of all sorts of backgrounds. I do love the diversity of the US though: adds a lot of spice.

That kind of homogeneity manifests everywhere though. For example, if you look at busy traffic in Japan, it's very orderly since all Japanese abide by an unspoken social rule. When people want to merge into traffic, you let one car merge and then you pass. Then the next car lets one car merge, and then they pass. Everyone abides by this system, making things very predictable and orderly. Meanwhile, I go to LA in busy traffic and it's like everyone is honking and someone is screaming out the window.

I don’t think japans universal that much, I’ve been to Japan before and I made sure to research stuff about the culture so I didn’t do anything disrespectful on accident when I was their.

I knew certain stuff like not wearing shoes around the house because that’s something In my own culture as well but stuff like chopstick etiquette and not to tip since it’s considered rude. Where some stuff I had to learn.

I liked my stay at Japan a lot though. The food was amazing, and Japanese airlines is S tire

@doopayo For me, it seems comparatively a lot more uniform, although I might be biased since I am from Japan and maybe I just found a more difficult time adapting to the US. The social rules are quite complicated although, for example, the no-shoe-in-the-house rule tends to be observed uniformly... whereas in the US, I've seen some people (even those not Asian) do it, but most don't.

What I found difficult in the US, particularly was that it seemed to vary based on the person what they considered polite. For example, if we call an older man "sir" or an older woman "ma'am", some like it, and some hate it. In Japan, we can be kind to people without ever being confused for like a "simp". Things of this sort. At least from my perspective, it seems far more consistent.

@TurnoKid in the Us since a lot of different cultures exist that’s probably why social norms are a bit mixed up. I also find it weird when some people don’t talk their shoes off when going in their house areas so I guess it’s just a person on person bases. But things like referring to older women as ma’am and older men as sir should just be universal things. Maybe it’s just the people you’ve talked to but I definitely think that’s a respectful way to refer to elders but I might be biased as respecting elders is a big part in my culture so it might be different for other people
