What is a birthright trip? How do they usually go?

Under Israeli law, non-Israeli Jews have visitation rights to Israel (I don't know the fine details); many young Jewish folks go on trips to see it, usually referred to as "birthright" trips (which may have specific details to them that, again, I don't know). I've had a couple of friends do it.
