When speaking casually; how do you refer to the country that sits between Canada and Mexico?

I usually say the US. I've heard many people from us say America.

I normally introduce myself as being from the United States. USA... USA... USA! is a chant when we are squaring off against Canada in ice hockey.

Inside my own country, we consider ourselves to be "Americans", but as other have pointed out, that isn't accurate since everyone on this side of the globe is an American.

Speaking of Americans, it is worth noting that while 1 billion people live in the "Americas", 70% of those people live in Mexico, Brazil, and the United States.

Canadians usually say "The States."
As in "Yeah I was down in the states for a while."

I say america but sometimes type usa because its quicker. America flows off the tongue but usa just sounds like an std. I'd never say the United States of America. I get the whole continent v country thing but I don't think the other American countries want to seen as america.

I usually refer as Estados Unidos (United States) cause in portuguese USA, US or EUA are kind of uncorfortable to pronounce. I think never use America cause America its not a country but a whole continent.

Can't stand calling it 'America' because it's not... well, it's not two continents. It's just one country. It'd be like if the UK was the UKoE and we just called it 'Europe' for short. How confusing would that be?

Although the official name of the country is used as USA or US in our language, we always say America unofficially for some reason. And while talking, America (country), is sometimes very confused with America (continent).

Per your update, I think it would depend on the way it's being used... I mean they use America not US or United States Of America... In the saying "America land of the free"(not that that sentiment rings true these days)
