What’s it like?
Anything special to pack?
What’s the hardest thing to get used to?
Be aware of the area you choose to camp in. Some areas are more isolated than others, some are not. Know the species that inhabit the area and make sure you have the right equipment to keep yourself safe.
Bring first aid and learn the basics. Know how you plan to prepare food and take care of your hygiene. If you bring matches or flammables, make sure you put them out properly to avoid causing a massive fire. Be aware of the time too. Bring markers like those fluorescent strings to avoid getting lost if you plan on exploring around without trails or markers.
Dismiss all of this if you aren't sleeping in a tent:
If you're not used to sleeping on the ground in a tent, you might find yourself waking up cold, aching and possibly wet. I've been wilderness camping in cadets before and the one thing I suggest is really important is the way you set up your tent.
Make sure you set it up correctly. We padded the bottom and top with plastic to reduce moisture from seeping in and it worked. We also got cots to avoid sleeping on the grou d and waking up wet and aching.
Thank you! Two older girls will have some camping experience so 🤞they will know most of the basics
I did wilderness for the first time last year. I hated it for the first day or two but loved it by the end. Bug spray. Pack lots of it. Forget about privacy and inhibitions and hygiene habits esp if you use the buddy system. That may be the hardest. Rain and cold water can be a real treat too.
So no skinny dipping, lol.
@Wise4myage We did it every day but brrrrrrrr
Yeah, but it is fun.
What’s the buddy system and why is that the hardest?
Buddy system is where you partner up with someone and stay together if you need to leave the campsite. The point is that you always remain in visual contact with someone else. So you give up privacy for safety. You do everything with your buddy. Everything. It takes some getting used to.
I did a long time ago. We just had a tent and sleeping bags in a backpack. Brought some food and water. It used to be fun to do this.
Yes.
I didn't care for it. I much prefer Ft. Wilderness camping.
