Was on a bus from Oklahoma to Texas once and we stopped at a gas station. The bus took off while I was in the bathroom. Fortunately someone noticed and they came back about ten minutes later but it was still irritating

Yeah a lot of times. I have even got off a train stop earlier than I needed as friends were getting off

Talking with colleagues or friends on the bus I missed a stop frequently.
Travelling on a train, falling asleep, I woke up about 50 km further.

I have used it at times, but I haven't missed my stop.
Everything is laid out pretty well.
