Does this look like a fun hike to you?

In late September last year, I did this.

I rode my machine to the trailhead and then hiked the rest of the way.

Not passable except on foot after this point.

Looking back to where I parked

A good part of this is hiking in a slot canyon.

Continuing down the path for some time. It was a pretty hot day, even in late September. Many of the twists and turns provided me with shade, for which I am grateful.

Path can get pretty narrow at some points.

Fallen rock on path

A loose rock above kind of looked like it might fall (out of picture.) I just climbed over the fallen one and hoped the other one wouldn't fall on me and continued on my way.

I had lunch here, studied these interesting formations and met a couple here, visited for a short time before continuing on.

Does this look like a hike you would do? If so take lots of water and salty snacks, I'm sure you know why.

I plan on going back one day, and spending more time here, going even farther... even camping over night.

I love hiking and backpacking. We have the second canyon in the country Here in Texas, It's callled Paladuro Canyon In Canyon Texas. I have hiked and backpacked it several times. My favorite place to hike is Kauai and Maui in Hawaii. I have been there three times with my family when I was younger to hike The mountains. I haven't hiked in a few years since starting a family but would love to go back to Canyon Texas.

Who cares, you went there. You still did what you set out to do. Besides, you were safe about it as well. Most of the times I watch this on tv, they recite a story of someone who went unprepared. You knew when to stop ☀️👍

by the way if you do return, take absolutely everything essential for survival with you. I’m not kidding about those stories. People lose they’re way in the baking heat pretty fast, the elements mess with their mind.

I grew up in stuff like this, between this and the mountains, forests and all. It is pretty easy for me, but I have a Personal Locator Beacon too, just in case and some self defense stuff.

I have done desert survival stuff taught by my family, like how to get water from various plants and stuff.

So yeah this wasn't that hard, but I'm sure it would be for others.

Wow, that hike looks very challenging & demanding…

And nice pics, and pretty cool that you did that: it definitely looks like something an inexperienced hiker (or non-hiker like myself) should NOT attempt—especially without knowing what you’re “up against” beforehand, and being in good shape.

A inexperienced hiker probably wouldn't be able to find the trail head. 😁 I would say this is more of a intermediate trail, not easy but not hard. If I went down further than I did, I'd say it gets to be harder.

As there is places where I came up to a 8 foot straight up rock wall... okay fine, not too bad to climb but need someone with me to push me up and then I can help pull them up. I didn't go any further because of that.

It was an intermediate difficulty trail, but there are things on it like 8 foot rock walls where help is needed by another—ok…

That made me think: “wow, the ‘buddy system’ should always be employed while doing intermediate & difficult hikes/climbs, because (‘God-forbid’) someone could get hurt and the other might need to ‘call-in help.’ “

Yup, which if I can get people to go I always prefer, but people get too busy and I learned if I wait for them to not, things just never happen. My buddy is my dog and my PLB, in case I run into problems.

Looks beautiful! Most of my hikes are forest and mountainous but switching it up is always fun. If I ever get around to my cross country road trip I’d like to stop at some of these different parks and do some hiking. I’m always up for new hikes in new places. Do you have to worry about mountain lions or other larger predators there?

I am more of a woodsy, mountain hiker because we do not have rock formations like that in the Northeast. However it does look pretty cool. Also you were practically the only one there. I would do that hike if it was around here.

I definitely like the mountains better, but sometimes I change it up. I thought it would cooler this time of the year.

Yes that does look like a fun hike! However I do avoid slot canyons unless I am sure there is no rain anywhere in the area. Rain can be several miles away and travel down the slot as a flash flood.

Of course, always good advice. I always check the forecast and on this day there wasn't even a cloud over the state.

Close-ups of the formations in the last picture would likely be interesting.

20 years ago it would have looked like a lot more fun, but I could still give it a shot up to a mile, with some decent hiking shoes. (I'd have to go shopping, first, before the hike.)

I've been on some amazing hikes and back packing trips in my day. I love nature's wonders. Canyons can be particularly magical.

40 is getting pretty hard to come by these days. I'm currently with the Ruger and HST 147s ATM. Now if it was bear country then I'd need some hard cast. Looking to upgrade to CZ for 9 and. 45

In July probably around a 105 for day time high, when I went it was 95 but night time could still get down to 45 or so, nature of deserts and all. Hot in the day, cool at night.

what were the temperatures down there?

Between 2 and 5 or so, peak day time was around 95, but that time of the year could also have been lower, maybe 10 degrees lower. Just happened to be a big heat spell that week.

Night time temps for camping over night, can get down to the 40's.
