Where should I visit for vacation?

Those are your two choices? Out of those two, go to the Netherlands. Cancun is a wasteland. If you want a gorgeous beach, there are plenty of better spots to go. If you want amazing food that's cheap, and an inexpensive vacation, go to Portugal. They have beaches too!

I've been to the beaches in Portugal and besides being cold af, they are ugly af and have nothing, and I mean nothing on Mexican beaches.

Mexican food is generally very fat heavy, while Portuguese is not. Holland doesn't have great food, but you're not going there for food. I've been to Cancun many, many times when I was younger, and I'll never go back.

Mexican food is not fat, TexMex is.
Also, the Mayan Riviera encompasses the whole peninsula. Cancun is just where the airport is. I'm not interested in fancy hotels

It all depends on what you eat in Mexico. And to clarify, you listed Cancun as your vacation spot, not other areas. Cancun is a pit, in my opinion. There's really nothing BUT resort hotels or villas crowded together. Even down the coast, from Puerto Morales to Tulum, it's gotten crowded and overbuilt, so I have no idea where you have in mind to go that would be a good vacation spot. Safety is a big concern as well.

I would go to The Netherlands if I had the chance way before Cancun. Actually, I have been to Cancun, so perhaps that doesn't count but in weighing it out, there is more to do and see in The Netherlands, in my opinion. Lot's of great history, beautiful architecture and people. Also, one can sample some 'Space Cake' in Amsterdam and that is one of the main reasons I would want to go there. The history and the old buildings and houses are what interest me but then again, I am a historian and antique collector, so of course. I also went to Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen and Tulum and Chichen Itza when we went to Cancun. Either one of your choices would be excellent but yes, The Netherlands over Cancun for me.

Cancun is too touristy. The Netherlands has a lot of history, places to visit, and very nice people.

Depends what sort of vacation you want at this time. They're two very different places. But you can't go wrong with either one.

I'd go to Mexico, but not cancun specifically. There are other towns on the Riveria Maya which are nicer.
