If I'm hiking through grizzly bear country, then maybe. Road trip... I've driven all over the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia; I've never needed a weapon ever. Bear mace is probably a safer bet if you ask me, nonleathal and very effective.

I'm traveling to be with friends/family so could happen by someone I know and also someone I don't know. I'm not willing to risk it especially since I have my kids with me

You do you. But my point is that people who carry guns around are more prone to kill someone then the ones who never carry a weapon. The reason why is because we are emotional beings and we react. So the real dangerous person is the one who owns a gun or carries a gun. Studies had shown that people who are victims of kidnapping or human trafficking rarely happens in the united States or in Europe or I may call it first world country. It's not every day. In other hand if you go to a third world country then yes rape, kidnapping, human trafficking, murder, getting robbed happens every single day so it makes sense to carry a weapon or even an assault weapon like a R15 to defend you're family. What you have it's called paranoia. Can't be scared everywhere you go. It's extremely unhealthy. Therapy might help in relieving those symptoms. NYC women are very tough and they are out walking alone in the dark streets. They are a great example of courages women. Something very surprising to see. Such a big city full of the unknown..
Anyways I'm sorry for all the spill but I'm against people carrying guns in public. I'm not against having a gun at home or against the second amendment but there should be restrictions. Everytime I see a regular stranger carrying a concealed weapon in public does scare my children and does throw me off a bit because we don't know them. We don't know what they are capable of. Obviously we are entitled to our own opinions.

I'm not sure which state and city you living in that is so safe but where I live (including the 3 other states I've lived in) kids gets snatched at the grocerystore being a foot away from their parents. People driving around picking up women that are out jogging and they get sold into human trafficking. Like there is dangerous people out there. Your mentioning NYC women walking around at night like duh it's a city with lots of people around, lights, cameras, police. If I walk around at night we don't even have street lights so ain't nobody gonna see or help when something goes wrong.
I see nothing wrong when I see strangers carrying in public but I was raised that way my dad, mom, 4 brothers all carry. I'm the only one thats low key about it tbh. My kids are a little normalized to it so they've never even questioned why someone might have a gun. It's just normal part of life here in America
