Have you ever hated living in a certain town/city, only to miss it when you move away?

I've lived in a few cities now. Some of them, I liked living in when I was actually there, and so it was understandable enough that when I left, I missed the place. Other times, I lived in cities that I couldn't wait to get out of the moment I moved there, only to have nostalgic memories once I moved away. Do you have similar situations? I wonder why this happens. If you're willing to share which town/city that was, especially if you lived in Canada, please do!

Not exactly, but I do kinda get what you mean.

I moved away from Canada (a country I thought I would never leave to live somewhere else) for many years, and when I came back to my city, found it was very different. My friends who remained told me it has changed, beware, and all that, but I sort of had to experience it myself to really understand and know.

I won't go into all the reasons why and how it's different, but it sucks. Culturally, governmentally, I don't like it. However, I have to keep reminding myself (over and over and over again) that no place is all-good, and very few places stay the same. Moving is major, and each move I've done has been very costly, so I'm sort of stuck here now, and it sucks to see a not-good future, but with no easy answers on better alternatives (because the cost of living has gone up in every place I have considered or been in.)

Everything is relative. I say this all the time. Maybe it's a bit of a mantra; to remind myself that we constantly compare, and we know when something has gotten worse, not better. But better is relative to something else, or to before. Unfortunately. Live and learn, and suffer the consequences of every decision. There's that phrase, 'You can't go home again.' Seems to apply, perhaps. "Past times which are fondly remembered are irrecoverably in the past and cannot be relived." Healthy-in-the-mind people reflect fondly on the past and accept its past-tense. My mind tends to destructively feel sadness for what is no more. Even though I know that I have other things which are. Hopefully you have better luck with that. Maybe it's a Canadian trait, lol.

When I used to live in a poorer city, I did not like the smell of sweaty people on the buses, and I thought the street atmosphere made a lot of roads too dangerous for single girls to travel on alone, even during the day. Also it was hard to get to too many places if you did not have a car. I was lucky my swimming pool and best friend were biking and walking distance from my home. Those were the only places I ever visited other than the park and seniors home which were right across from each other. My grandma lived in that home and she had a best friend who did not speak her language. Nobody did cause it was a mostly white seniors home.

I moved around a lot. There was one city that I didn't like, but ended up living there for 11 years. I didn't leave in all that time because I was tired of moving. But the entire time I didn't like it, sometimes even hated it. The idea that I might spend the rest of my life there really nagged at me. As I lived there more and more years, it nagged at me more and more. Over time I didn't hate it any more, but it never felt like home to me and that bothered me a lot.

Eventually I left and moved back to where I was originally from. It was one of the best decisions I've made in life. I never looked back or regretted moving.

However there are SOME things about that place that I liked and missed. I had some good friends. I liked going up in the mountains and fishing or hiking. I liked the apartment that I had lived in for the last seven years. I liked that there were lots of nice locations within a couple hours drive.

But it was never home to me. It was not where I wanted to spend the rest of my life and die. So I never regretted leaving. Although I do miss some things, I don't miss actually living there. Where I live now is home and the other place was not.

Earlier today I went to a funeral of someone I've known for 62 years. There is only one place in the world where that can happen, and it's right here. It was sad, but I also saw a lot of people that I've known just as long. That has real value. There is no other place in the world that has that kind of value.

No. I absolutely DESPISED that sh*thole of Philadelphia, and never in my life want to have to move back there. I'm grateful daily I'm no longer in that liberal toilet of a city. It's the San Francisco of the East Coast.

And I can tell you grew up rich! These types of houses cost about a million+ dollars. Philly had them, too. Not far from where I lived, in fact.

Literally the ONLY thing I'd miss about Philadelphia, is the food. I will say they had some good food there. It's just too bad there weren't enough jobs around for me to ever have enough money to try most of it.

I didn’t really Live anywhere In particular the city where I walked a lot was named Skyrim always Had Trouble with the Town guards And I committed a lot of crimes against Skyrim but I left Skyrim and Joined a gang called the Dawn-guard
Became a Vampire Lord I have had a pretty interesting life considering The kind of things I’ve had to deal with like walking Around getting lost and ending up fighting a Bear and running away from a Giant it all started when I Was captured by the guards And escaped a dragon.

I’m moving, if possible, to another state in the next month. If I can’t find housing there within a month, then I’ll be stuck where I am for a little while, but I’ll still try to do a mini move by mid January, come back in summer for the rest.


I lived in Detroit for a while. I loved certain things, hated certain things. Some of them were specific to the area, but some of it was just the state in general. I don’t miss it most of the time… I didn’t hate it more than I hate where I am now. And I would probably try to not talk too much crap about my situation now when I’m in a different area, even as toxic as I think it has been for me.

I talked shit about Alaska all the time. It's valid but I definitely missed it once I left. It wasn't so much the place, but the people and being accustomed to certain stores and restaurants.

I have no desire to ever go back and am glad I'm gone, lmao.

Sort of. I moved from the Pacific Northwest to the Southwest and at first I liked it not being so gloomy all the time. But now global warming is making the deserts unbearably hot while the Northwest is turning into a paradise.

Since I can work remotely, my lease is going to be up at the end of the year and my sister is planning on moving in with some friends from school I am strongly considering moving back.

Mostly no, aside from one instance when I was a kid. But I can see it happening. I've lived in 2 cities and a village. The first city I did miss but that was because I was a kid and now I'm older I'm happy I don't live there. And the other city I stayed in a hotel 4-5 days a week with work and I hated it. I hated it when I was there. And I still hate that city now.

Yes, but a bit differently. I loved my small farm town when I first came to it. Now it’s too big a city for it’s resources. I would miss my old town as much if I moved, but not what it has become.

I haven't really moved except certain parts of the city I live in but I was born in San Diego California and lived there till I was 2 so I don't really remember being there and always wonder how I be different if I still. live there.

Kinda, I think I would miss this neighborhood considering this was my first apartment and it was entertaining yet its getting bad over here. The leasing office is moving in anyone at this point.
