How dangerous is it to walk home alone at night in this situation?

I live right near a busy main road; and it’s a 3 minute walk from the bus stop on the corner, from where I get off the bus, to my house, which is on the corner of a dark and quiet road; the first house. We have a security door and I always carry my key in my right hand, hiding it. So I can open the door quickly and also, just in case I get attacked. So I can use them as a weapon. I live in Australia. I come home between 9-11pm at night on nights out with friends.

Kinda yeah. If there was maybe someone at home who you could be in the phone to while you walked home or someone like a boyfriend to walk with you.

When I was 15 my parents were away for the night. I was walking home from my friend's house at 2am and I was a little bit nervous and thought there was guy following me but I was too frightened to look back. I had the key in my hand ready to open the door as I often did this. Well as soon as I unlocked the door I got thumped on the back of the head and pushed into my parents house. The guy raped me and warned me if I screamed he'd cut my throat. I never saw his face and he made me take a bath. My parents have cctv around the house but it was unable to identify him nor were anyone of the neighbours cctv, just a figure in a hoodie walking around waiting. there's just a video of him hitting me and pushing me into the house. Nobody saw anything and the guy was never caught. There was no dna either.

Is Australia really that crime infested?

My understanding was that the crime rate in Australia is much lower than in the USA. Where I live in America, I could sleep outside all night and no one would bother me. Most places in the USA are very safe at night. Especially white neighborhoods. A three minute walk in the dark alone is peaceful and relaxing. That said I've walked around crime prone neighborhoods like the one the video for hours many times and no one messed with me. You can see drug dealers, junkies, gang members, prostitution, cops on random calls, etc. When I was a teen Miami was the murder capital of the USA and much worse than the video and I could walk though said neighborhoods without issue. Typically muggers don't like "busy" places. They like to catch people alone on a deserted street with no witnesses. They also like places where there is a high chance of a pay off. So if there is a really quiet place with no one around and something like an ATM, then be aware of lone cars parked a short distance away. They like to go after elderly people many times because they are frail. They also tend to target men more often, because men don't scream for help.
