How to be safer, when walking alone at night?

A few nights ago, I was taking a 5 minute walk back to my house, after a fun evening out with friends. A white car that was driving past me in the opposite direction, slowed down and stopped as it passed me. I ran away, which wasn’t far, as it happened at the corner of my house. I got inside as the car was turning around, trying to follow me.

Fortunately, I wasn’t walking anywhere where the driver could park. I was wearing slip on shoes that night and I couldn’t run fast. I was thinking, should I be better prepared for a repeat of this situation, where I should wear shoes that are better for running in? I’ll be out on Wednesday and Thursday night and I’ll be catching the bus home and taking a five minute walk home.
