Other than price and mileage/year, how do you decide what car you want?

I know next to nothing about cars, just that the higher the mileage the older it likely is, and the more likely it is to break down easier (not always, but generally). I have to keep it low, money wise because I really don't have that much.

However, I'm also not really sure what else I should really be looking at when I look at the ones I could afford

I would likely not buy a new car. If I went that route, I'd lease first
