Anybody ever been to the real Oktoberfest in Munich Germany? How about your local event? How do they compare?

I have been to both the Munich Oktoberfest and the Cannstatter Volksfest (the two largest festivals in Germany), and it's really not my sort of activity, to be honest. It's all fine during the afternoon, but as soon as the crowds reach a certain alcohol level, it can get dicey. People wanting to go there should be prepared for a certain amount of public urinating, vomiting and fighting plus pickpocketing and groping.

I've been to the Munchen one. I still have the 1/2 liter and 1 liter glass mugs from it. There is a local one coming up near me in Wa state USA. I want to go mostly for the social aspect but also brats beer spetsla and girls.

Oh and the street brotchen and cheese steak sandwiches. Do street vendors still sell those in Germany?

The street food here is still various and aplenty, festival or no festival. Do American festival cooks get the Spätzle right?

Never seen it here. Not even schnitzel. I have a friend that owns a bar that has 80s arcade games and live bands but also specializes in European food. He does not serve either.

Nice city, I have been there a few times. The whole U. S. barracks area was redeveloped if I remember correctly. You might want to check the YouTube channel of NALF, he is an American that played for the American football team Unicorns and lives in Schwäbisch Hall.

I've never been at the Oktoberfest but I have been to Munich and I have great memories of it. The people are super nice in southern Germany, the food is good and there's just a happy warm atmosphere we were at a Christmas market and stuff. I know an American guy who lives in Germany and goes to Oktoberfest every year with his family it's the highlight of his year :). i feel like I should go there again some time :).

I have a Christmas wine mug still from the town I lived in called Schwaebisch Hall. Something like Gleuvine.

Glühwein yes it's a special drink that they only make around Christmas. It's wine that they heat up with a lot of different spices in it. It's popular because it's hot and everything is cold in winter but I don't like the taste much.

Never went to any but saw it on tv it's just full of very drunk people laughing and crashing on the ground, nothing interesting seems only fun if you're also drunk but I don't drink...

My parents are in Germany this week / next week for a vacation around several European countries. I chose to stay behind even though they offered me a free ticket to join them.

I loved my stay in Europe but it was in the early 90s when I was 20 on. It's changed quite a bit. I still have Deutch marks.

@DryGermanGuy, he is correct. Be on your guard. However after having traveled ALL through Europe, the Oktoberfest is by far and large the best festival I have ever attended. The 2nd was the largest wine festival in the world also in Germany. A word to the wise, a trip down the Mosel river starting at Koblenz headed towards Trier during wine festival season will leave an indelible impression on your soul for life. Ich Liebe Deutschland!

Love Oktoberfest great beer and great food but I drink to enjoy things go really bad fast if you get stupid drunk. I also love The Christmas Market great buys and drink love the hot wine [but I have also heard it called Bluwine or Bluewine ] and by the name listed in other comments..

My boss used to go to Germany for it every year and loved it. Never went, but not being a partier type I doubt I would have liked it anyway.

While living in Berlin, I attended several Oktoberfests in Munich. drank a lot of beer, but never drunk. A great time!
