In local news recently American tourists tried to take a car along a small footpath and got well and truly stuck after ignoring a no-entry sign and following their satnav (pictured). Not to worry, being Americans they simply abandoned it.
But have you ever driven down a road and thought "shit I wish I never came this way." perhaps it was too narrow or extremely steep or you thought is this really a road?
Probably the worst I've done is a short cut over the shropshire hills which is very steep and narrow with a sheer drop inches from your side door. It is a proper road but a few cars have plummeted over the edge.
I was driving a rental and my parents were with me. We were passing through Honfleur, France. I wound up on a street that was barely wide enough for one car. On both sides there were stone walls with doors and windows set in them for the individual residences. We came to a T at the end of the street that was a one way T where you had to turn left. But the left turn was an acute angle and the streets were super narrow. As I said, they were also lined with stone walled buildings.
I'm a good driver, so I edged forward and back multiple times in three-point turns. But I honestly thought I was going to get stuck. It was a nightmare.

I wound up on some very narrow two way roads in Ireland. When the road got too narrow for two cars to pass, their solution was to take the line out of the center and let drivers figure it out.
There were times when I had a stone wall on my left side was was certain that I was going to lose my mirror when oncoming cars passed on my right. We're talking an inch of leeway on either side. There was zero room for error. It was hairy.

We stayed in a large hotel in London. I parked in front, went inside and asked where I should park. They said the parking lot was round back. I drove around the block but didn't see a parking lot. The streets were confusing so I tried a couple more times to see if I had made a wrong turn. I went back inside and they told me the same thing, so I tried again. It started to feel like Groundhog Day or being stuck on a roundabout and I started to lose my mind.
I pulled up to the back door of the hotel and stormed inside. At the same time, a large group of people had just arrived and were having trouble with their reservations. I told some kid in a bellboy uniform that I couldn't find the parking lot. He could see my state of frustration and didn't want even more tumult in the hotel, so he kind of panicked and said "No worries, sir. I'll be happy to park your car for you."
He took my keys and went out the door. He came back a minute later, and said he had forgotten that he didn't know how to drive. ROFL
I drove a truck up a large hill to a customer's house - it was a barely-one-lane road with a huge drop-off. When I finally got up to the house, there was a turn-table intended to turn your car around, because there was so little space in the "driveway area" - but the turn-table was broken. I ended up having to back down that hill about half a mile, with virtually no visibility other than the side mirrors.
I advised the customer that I wasn't going to do his installation and I would note his account so that no one else got sent there. Most people don't have my driving skills, and installers could easily be killed driving off his "driveway."
I’m an American and one of the cities I’ve driven through is notorious for one ways. Some of them are really narrow, go up a steep windy hill, and don’t have a guard rail. I accidentally found one of them and was never so concerned about accidentally driving off a cliff. Like how was that even legal to have a drivable road with a steep drop off, no guard rail, and no warning sign
When I was younger, we used to explore around south Ontario (Canada) a lot. Once we drove into a city and we didn’t know it was a sundown town. We had a lot of problem finding a place to stay. Long story short, we basically had to lock our doors and make a bee line out of that town.
I wanted to visit a buddy living in a part of the state where I had never been before, so I used a TomTom satnav. First half of the drive seemed perfectly fine, but then the satnav had a digital brain fart and routed me... I have no idea where. I ended in a fricking quarry somewhere in no-man's-land!!! I had to drive to the nearest town and restart the navigation from there. Lost an hour on the whole trip.
Yes, following Google maps without data roaming; it tried to send me over a high pass in the Alps that's closed all winter. I ended up in someone's driveway with snow piled up two metres high either side of me.
Yeah I hate taking some roads in my town actually. There are always under construction or have ton of potholes. I go up this very steep hill going up a mountain and I was so scared that I didn’t pick up enough speed to make snd I would either go backwards or flip backwards.
I wanted to go cruising in Los Angeles. Everybody else went to bed. I had to get out of the relatives house I was on vacation and hit the streets. I got lost for 10 1/2 hours and ended up everywhere Malibu, Hollywood, Disneyland, downtown Los Angeles
I have not. But often I read about travelers during the winter following GPS directions taking roads that do not remain clear during snow, and they died when the got stuck and could not get out.
I wasn't the one driving but I was helping my friend do her side job for her gas money. We decided to do shopping for someone who lived further up. It took us so long to find this person's house and on top of that we went up and down these huge road hills. And then we understood why they didn't want to leave their house to do their own groceries. I mean, who wants to drive up and down road hills like that? Not them that's for sure! We won't ever be doing that again.
Yeah but it’s usually with the tractor trailer and really hard to back out to turn around, with a car I stop and back up if it doesn’t look like a road
I drove a gator through a puddle at work. My co-workers always drove around it, but I was like, "Fuck that. I'm no pussy!"😂 Let's just say I found out why they drove around it🤣
