In 1934, the Flying Scotsman was clocked at 100 mph on a special test run—officially the first locomotive in the UK to reach that speed. Still recognized for that feat. The owner arranged for it to travel to America, and a later owner took it to Australia, so it is the locomotive that has traveled around the world.
However, in 1938 an engine named the Mallard reached 126 mph, a record that still stands.
The Mallard mainly for the longevity of its record. Both were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley.
