Would you rather upgrade/renovate your home or travel more?

Let’s say you can’t do both. Which would you prefer to spend your money on?

My former co-worker has been to almost 60 countries (and still counting). She is now a full-time traveler. I remember going to her place for Christmas dinner and noticed that she seems to have this minimalist concept for everything.

On the other hand, my husband’s cousin remodeled her house that looks almost like a resort/Airbnb unit but she rarely travels. I got tempted to do the same thing after seeing her place lol but then I remember I am a traveler so don’t think it’s worth the money though I am aware that it is a good investment if you are planning to sell it one day.

I just spent a ton of money fixing everything on my house that could fail. I had new siding installed, replaced all the windows and doors, put on a new roof, replaced my sump pump, removed some trees, had central air conditioning installed and painted my garage doors. I still need to put sealnat on my driveway.

Then I would like to travel

I definitely prefer that to fix up my place rather than travel like that. I'm not interested in going to 6 countries much less 60 - my own state is larger than most countries and there are other big ones nearby. I have little desire to be crammed into an aluminum tube for 14 hours to visit some other countries.

I spend 50-60 hours a week either driving or working at someone else's house. When I'm off work, I enjoy being home.

I just had a neighbor who spent $450 having their air conditioner repaired - the capacitor was bad and the guy replaced it. Bad capacitors are, by far, the most common cause for AC failures, and while some companies will "only" charge you $250 or so to replace one, many charge $400-500 or even more, because most people don't know any better, and have no idea what's wrong and how to fix it, and they just want their AC to work again because it's 94F inside the house.

This prompted me to buy a replacement capacitor for my AC unit. I spent $20 (with tax and delivery) for a new capacitor, and when mine fails, I'll have it replaced in well under 10 minutes. In fact, I might just replace it when it comes in. Mine is 25 years old, so it wouldn't be the worst idea to replace it proactively. And this kind of maintenance means I can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repair bills, by fixing things before I am desperate to have them fixed and have to pay a huge premium for someone else to do so.

Travel. The house I live in was put in a trust so the trust owns it and not me. It was my dad's house and he set up the trust before he died and I was awarded the trust and the trust pays all the bills, except internet. I pay for internet. The trust uses the money he made from investments to pay the bills.

I mean, obviously travel, but renovation is probably more important. It's like this in my family right now. My mom wants to renovate the house, and my dad is spending money on road trips and weekend getaways

as much as i love to travel, home is my sanctuary. my castle. it's worth fixing up and making it a place that brings you comfort and joy. not to sound too much like a Christmas song. :D
