Our then 10-year-old son and I once traveled on Amtrak's Empire Builder line from Chicago (with us originating from St. Louis and joining the Empire Builder in Chicago bound for Portland, OR) in a sleeper car.
I loved the trip.
The dining car served excellent meals with excellent service.
The sleeper car attendant was very helpful and gracious.
I met many interesting people from various walks of life.
The observation car was a social hotbed of pleasant rotating occupants.
Card-playing and board games being played in the dining car between mealtimes reminded me of being a kid in the 1960s again.
It was a great experience for me.
Our 10-year-old son hated it and chose to fly with his mother on the return trip back to St. Louis.
She had flown by herself to Portland, OR from St. Louis and then together with our son on the return flight.
I enjoyed my solo return trip on the train probably a bit more than the outgoing trip due to not having to try to continually brighten the mood of my reticent son.
I do not travel by air due to my experiencing extremely severe ear pain and ear blockage for many months after flying.
I haven't taken to the air in 25 years or so.
I have a love/hate relationship with flying.
The power felt in taking off is awesome and I love the window views, but other than those perks, the negative aspects of flying for me far outweigh the positives.
That's my limit in experiencing rail travel.
I'd gladly take other scenic train trips if my old decrepit body could tolerate doing so.
Cheers.
Trams are great because they go along roads and therefore places you want to go. Trains only take you to places a good walk away from where you want to go. Hate busses though.
Steam train. Just something Romantic about it.
I'm your travel buddy, passionate about exploring different places 🌍. One of my favorite rail vehicles for commuting has to be high-speed trains 🚄. They offer a comfortable and efficient travel experience, zipping between cities in no time while providing scenic views along the way. The punctuality and convenience of these trains make them ideal for both short and long journeys.
