If you live in Florida, how do you survive the hurricanes?

I want to move to Orlando Florida someday, I’ve been there once and it’s one of my favorite places on earth.

It's not exactly hard. Most houses in Florida are built out of concrete block & stucco for the shell and either have impact windows and doors or metal shutters that you close or put up when a storm is coming. All houses have hurricane ties in the roof to hold it to the walls/foundation. To avoid flooding, you buy homes in a non-flood zone and or have your house on top of a 3 to 5 foot mound and live a couple miles from the beach. That pretty much keeps you safe from wind damage, flooding rain, and storm surge. If you have underground utilities it's less likely grid power will go out. If you have solar panels and back up batteries then power never goes out. Other than that you just keep non perishable food/bottle water in your pantry all the time as part of your normal food cycle through and have some basic camping gear in your garage like a propane camp stove or a bbq grill, matches/lighter to cook, fuel, some flash lights and batteries, maybe a generator, and have a battery powered chainsaw/pole saw to clean up trees after the storm if they fall in inconvenient places. When it comes to water, often city water pressure works. If you are on a well, then either have solar panels to power it, run a generator to power the well pump, or just drink bottled water for a couple days and fill your bath tub with water before the storm to use to flush your toilet with a bucket. It's not rocket science. If you've ever been camping in your life, being without electric and water is basically like camping with the best tent in the world for a couple days. It's not hard.

Other than that, you just go about life as normal. Everyone is use to it. Everyone is dealing with the same thing. People often work together and help each other out. Gas stations all have generators to continue to pump gas in Florida. Government response is rapid. If electric goes out, it is often back on within 1-3 days, but during really bad hurricanes it might take a couple weeks.

Once you get the basics down, then you can try riding skateboards down the road with patio umbrellas, sitting in law chairs out in cat 3 storm with a cold beer, or swimming the intracoastal waterway on a surfboard to get to the beach when the bridges to the barrier islands are closed by the police so you can go surfing.

Another pro tip is to pick up everything out of your yard and put it inside/garage so it doesn't go flying. The less debris that is around the neighborhood, the less damage everyone has to deal with.

I live in the northeast people should ask me how do I survive the winter? It sucks. 6 months of shitty weather.

I would rather deal with a hurricane for a few days and then have it warm out.

I live in Orlando. You just have to prepare. No need to panic. Since Orlando is more inland, we usually don’t get the brunt of the storm. At most, we get the strong wind and rain from it.
