Coming from a family that works in the travel industry, I did my share of traveling when it was fun and before all the hassle of today's travel.
Also, and this is my main reason, the pollution that comes with traveling. All the green house effect and the CO2 emission that invariably comes with it made me think that I can have just as much fun to stay at home. I have woods around my place that I can reach by bike, I have a lake where I can go for a swim, there are hundreds of miles of paths that I can hike, all within one hour's bike ride away. Why would I want to join a crowd of people going to the same place, doing the same thing when I can be all by myself and breathing clean air, paying in my own currency, eating the food that I know the where it is coming from and that does not have the potential to make me sick. Why would I want to be scared everywhere I go as a single traveling woman?
There is no place like home and that is where I am staying.

Mostly it's just because I'm scared to travel alone. I'd love to see so many new places but I don't have anyone to go with most of the time.

I just didn't ever have the money earlier in life, and my family's lack coordination makes planning anything at all EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.
I remember this one time my dad had an idea of renting a houseboat at a local-ish lake. It sounded like a nice idea, but nothing ever materialized.
Well, it turned out that the reason nothing materialized was because my dad neglected to mention that he had a boat picked out and everything, he was just waiting on people to communicate interest, times, dates, etc.

I spend my money on other things also trying to save.
The main actual problem with travelling cost is a place to stay, hence why I've only been to US recently because I knew someone there who let me stay at hers. Now I need that for other countries then it would be cheap and easy, also need it for several states as ya know US is a big place.00 Reply

@OlderAndWiser She is not critical but has some auto immune condition and is tired all the time. But thank you.

My first wife had an autoimmune disease. We divorced in 2004. She remarried. I recently learned that she died last year.

@exitseven Sorry to hear that. Wish her ... and you... well.

Planning. Planning to search for cheap tickets, planning to check for affordable hotels, planning to synchronize my days off with the days I intend on missing. I can't do planning, it is a special level of torture to me. Also the anxiety. The fucking anxiety of the whole process.
11 ReplyI have travelled the world, all 7 continents. I love travel but now find myself limited… but not by time, money or desire. I am limited by a F’ing cat! I live with gorgeous views all around and the place is really nice with all granite floors and marble bathrooms but friends and family say they will watch the cat but we don’t seem to settle on a date.
My sister recommended the “Rover” app to hire house sitters who will take care of my pet. I wish I knew earlier.

Travel was a joy before 2002.
My wife and I haven't flown anywhere since 2020 when the Nazis pushed the covid mandates. But we've taken some nice vacations by car.02 Reply- Asker29 d
Last flight I took was 2019. My friend and I opted to take a 6 hour road trip recently instead of fly because omg, we could pack a bottle of lotion, no--you can't bring an actual piece of luggage without a surcharge, no sh*tty dry tasteless sandwiches and dry pretzels for lunch, we could fill the car with pillows and blankets for the hotel and the car ride, we didn't have to practically strip to get through security, we could leave and go at our own pace, we could bring a cooler of our own food and drinks, no long lines, and no 'can't pick your own seat.' Flying has 100% become a money grab and just a series of hassles. It used to be somewhat relaxing to just catch a flight in "the good old days," but now...

I don't have much of a desire to travel outside the continental US, but am willing to do so for my wife's pleasure. In January, we have booked a 9 day cruise in the western Caribbean.

10 Reply At this point in life I feel like one big trip a year is enough for me and then I have a little bit of holidays left over for when I need to take a day off for something important or so.

When I was young I was limited as well that way. But that didn’t stop me. I remember on one trip I borrowed a stick shift car, a tent from another person, ate peanut butter sandwiches and hot dogs at a camp ground but had a great time. I did have enough money to go to Busch Gardens Williamsburg with my then girlfriend and now wife. She won’t camp now as she has been wife’ed but when dating she would.

Nothing really. My wife and I plan one cruise a year and several day, weekend or on-week trips closer to home.

Health. I've spent 7 of the last 8 weeks traveling. If I spent any less time at home, I'd conpletely fall apart.
