What's the best way to make an itinerary for a Europe tour?

How long are you going for? The biggest mistake I see people make is trying to cram too much into too little time, and only visiting the "main cities". My suggestion, instead of changing hotels everyday and covering large distances, base yourself in one city that has plenty to see, but also has a lot of places nearby that can be reached within 4 hours. Either just pick one region/country, or base yourself in a city/town that's close to other countries, so you can day trip to other countries just for one day.

I agree with Poppy, that ideally I would avoid capitals and big cities in general, though on the plus side, these places are usually better connected. But think of what interests you and plan your itinerary around that. Maybe instead of Paris, stay in Lyon or Strasbourg. Or instead of Rome, stay in Venice or Lake Garda.

Are you rather a beach person or perhaps someone that is not confident expressing yourself in another language?

Countries like Switzerland and Scandinavia tend to be more expensive than Croatia or Belgium. My personal favorite cities in Europe are Budapest, Vienna and Prague. Forget about London or Paris because they are way overrated unless you are a museum person.

Don't be too focused on the capital cities. The smaller places give a far better sense of what a country is like and are a lot less stressful and cheaper. For example London is over priced and a nightmare to navigate, you'll probably ger stabbed too.

Somewhere like Chester gives you a better idea of real England plus its a stones throw away from Liverpool Manchester Birmingham and north wales.
