What to pack for an overnight stay?

I’m travelling a long way on a hot day. I was wondering if a nightie, two pairs of underwear, toiletries and arriving in a t shirt and 3/4 pants would be appropriate, with the one dress for wearing out on my dinner date and the other to wear home the next day?
