It all depends, because I have an RV, I also back pack and I also car camp.
So when I car camp I use a tent, because my girlfriend hates bugs and does not like sleeping in the open. But I still bring a hammock for those nice afternoon naps by the river.
I use my RV for road trips, because honestly its not worth paying for a spot to park it, and do all the hook ups, towing and gas for a weekend get away in the woods. But the hammock always makes the trip with me in my RV.
When I backpack, it all depends on the duration and miles I am walking, if its a simple out and back over night trip I bring the hammock. But if its multiday excursion with over 10 miles of hiking or climbing up hills at elevation I sleep under the stars with sleep mat and waterproof sleeping system. I do not do winter backpacking trips, the weight of the required gear is too much for me now at 45, and its lost its wonder for me.
So most the time its a toss up between tent or sleeping under the stars with an occasional hammock and RV trip thrown in.11 Reply- +1 y
That's awesome nothing wrong with variety. Hammocks are so nice my parents always had one in the back yard. Love laying and reading a nice book so relaxing

+1 yA RV with a shower and a toilet, as my camping trips are often weeks long... I don't know anyone that camps in a tent for 2 or 3 weeks straight.
Used to sometimes sleep in the bed of a pickup, but due to my history needed to feel more safe and less exposed.10 Reply
+1 yIt's not camping unless you pack everything in on your back and then pack it all out. I don't know what it is but it ain't camping 😂

After I got married, my wife and I would go on camp outs. After the first time sleeping on a thin, backpacking mat, we bought thick, inflatable mattresses. Those are actually a nice luxury. Then she decided that she wanted a tent that was large enough to stand up in and get dressed, so we got a larger one - still a compact, dome tent, but 6' tall in the center. They she decided that she wanted a cot. As it turns out, she's not a roughing it type. LOL But she still enjoys camp outs.10 Reply617 opinions shared on Travel topic. Tent. I had a really nice popup tent which was super compact and attached easily to the rear rack on one of my bikes:

The tent could be set up faster than putting the bike up on its centerstand.

A tent. Very often I don't sleep in it. I use it for privacy to change clothes. I sleep outside under the stars on the ground or in a hammock.
At night the forest or desert is often very quiet, save for the odd coyote or owl.
Once at Joshua Tree I slept outside under the stars facing Polaris (the north star). I fell asleep and used the rotation of the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia about it as a kind of clock (15degrees is one hour). It was fun!11 Reply- +1 y

+1 yMy former neighbors had a Camper at a place called "Four Seasons" it was out in a wooded area so nice and we visited this Tee Pee but the Indian woman was sick and not available for us to meet her we had no idea where she was at but the first night there we were all wakened up with a thunderstorm and wow did the rain come down and lightning was coming in the windows

@Tiptoetamm Yeah quite of a experience
+1 ySometimes a tent. When I camp, I do not use established campgrounds. I go deep into woods and forest that are undisturbed. Most of the time I make my own shelter. I love survival camping so I usually only bring a pot to boil water and cook in, knife, handgun, a sleeping bag, 2 MREs in case of an emergency, matches and lighters. Occasionally I will bring a tent if I do not have a lot of time on my hands or if I am feeling lazy.

Tent, but I've also got a tarp to go over the bed of my truck and I have a hammock that hooks up to the truck as well. https://www. amazon. com/Hammaka-41531202-KP-Parachute-Hammock-Cradle/dp/B07CVLSGVM/ref=asc_df_B07CVLSGVM? tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80401843598238&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=m&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584001419099113&psc=1

I have a big 5th wheel RV. I did the tenting when I was younger but these old bones like a nice bed. I never cook in it. I do all the cooking outside on a camp stove, bbq or open fire. Everything tastes better when cooked outside.
