When You Go To A Foreign Country Should You Try To Speak Their Language?

When I go abroad on vacation I try my best to learn phrases of the country's language before I go on holiday. What is your opinion on this subject, is learning to say hello, goodbye and thank you sufficient?

Yes, absolutely. You should make your best effort to learn at least working knowledge of basic phrases you KNOW that you will need at a shop, hotel, taxi, etc. Don't be "angry, entitled American" acting like it's THEIR fault they don't speak YOUR language.

Also... SLOW LOUD English does not equal the language of the person you're speaking. (I've had people speak to me that way while I was working abroad. Idiotic presumption...)

Being able to regurgitate a few phrases isn't really speaking the language. It's one thing knowing how to ask for a cheese sandwich but if the waiter then starts talking back you just end up confused and embarrassed. Real language is never like you learn in a language class.

That said knowing how to say please and thank you never hurts and numbers are always useful

Learning a few basic phrases won't hurt, at the very least being able to ask in their native language if you speak English. But expecting them to be fluent is ridiculous. In most places anyways, you'll find people who speak English
