Have you ever lived anywhere where you didn't speak the language, or it wasn't your first language?

I did an internship in Barcelona as part of my undergraduate work. But I had studied Spanish for several years so it wasn't that bad. I have a huge amount of respect for people that move to a country and don't even speak the language.

Germany, for about 10 months. I only had a basic knowledge of the language.

Spain, where I settled 20 years ago. I did a language course at the university before moving abroad permanently.

What was your reason for moving to those countries?

Germany for military service. Spain after completing my language studies. It was just a logical step at the time and something I wanted to do, even if I was till in my twenties. I never looked back since.

How about you? Any plans in the near future?

Unfortunately no. Too expensive and I don't think I'd be brave enough to go somewhere where I didn't speak the language at all. I could manage doing another Spanish speaking country or maybe even Brazil or Portugal since I speak a little bit of Portuguese.

I haven't done that, and not sure I would venture to do it so... unless I can get by somewhat with English

No English was always the mine language were I lived

Yep. When I was ten, my parents got me. They left my country of origin for another country across the literal ocean, where I didn't even know enough English to communicate well. Then, they put me in an international school, where I had to learn four languages simultaneously.

I did it twice. After a while you pick up a few phrases.

But my work environment always provided a language that I can speak.

Uh, yes. I still can't very well.
