Did you ever date a partner from another country and if so did you learn to speak their native tongue?

My mom was of Chinese descent but was born in Thailand. She moved to the US where she married my dad (a plain old white American) but she died when I was only 2. But I recently learned that she taught my dad to speak Thai and understand Mandarin and I was amazed to learn that he remembered them after 38 years O_O

Yes and no. I dated someone from the US but was already fluent in English. I am not a native level speaker but I am close so we hardly ran into communication issues. The biggest issue was things I normally don't talk about online, like me not knowing certain foods.
