Or just speaking in a common language like English?
+1 yMy girlfriend is Iranian.
I am originally Turkish but born and raised in the UK. Although there are some similarities in our mother tongues, ıt's still a 2 different languages. Therefore the answer is yes. We communicate in English anyway, and she is learning Turkish, and I am learning Farsi. We go along good and have been since 3 years.00 Reply

+1 yFor sure. If I love them, learning their language is the least I can do.
I was raised bilingual. Language is an important connector. I'd be failing myself and my love if I didn't bother to learn a language for them.
How could I love them if I refused such an integral part of them? And for what? My own convenience?
Kinda a bitch move, in my opinion.10 Reply
+1 yThe foreigners I usually feel attracted to are either British or American and I can already speak their language (and even adopt their accent if they like).
If I had a partner from a non-English speaking country, I would be willing to learn his language and culture. I am fascinated by exotic things.00 Reply
I kind of can understand written Dutch now and can kind of follow spoken conversation in Dutch but being from the Netherlands pretty much everyone can speak English anyway. I would be willing to learn more but she's lived here 11 years and considers herself British. She knows more local slang than I do lol

@Pinay_ako When we first started living together, I will never forget him saying to me (I was in the kitchen) "Could you bring me a coldie darling?". I was like wtf does he want? An ice cube?
It is Aussie slang for beer. 🤣 - +1 y
@PrettyPriya oh 🤣 that! Ik what you mean. It helps to get to know your so more.

@Pinay_ako It certainly does! You are right about that. 🙂
+1 yYes, I find learning language extremely easy for me I just haven't found anything motivating or necessary enough to learn another, I speak 4 languages, I tried but had no sense of urgency to learn a 5th, speaking to someone who'd be German or turkish or Norwegian or whatever isn't an English Arabic French or Italian speaker would never make me want to learn it

Would definitely make me want**

+1 yI love languages, and can get by (not fluent) in several. So if the situation arose where my partner's native language was something other than English, of course I would learn it.
When I was married, I sort of did this, my then-wife's mother was from Latin America and Spanish was her native tongue, though she spoke very good English. I learned enough Spanish to communicate with her in Spanish, and she appreciated it.00 Reply 7.2K opinions shared on Relationships topic. No, I'd definitely want to learn her language, and did make an effort to do with the Asian women I dated when I was young. Although it isn't easy, it's the easiest way to learn a language, other than full immersion, which isn't possible for most adults to do.

+1 yIf this language is relevant, then yes.
When it's not (and that's the case for me just now) then I just adopt a few general phrases. I don't see the point in learning a language to only 'discuss' trivialities.
I'm not ''living'' with my native language - for practical reasons - and I expect a similar attitude from my partner.
