I’m trilingual. My first serious relationship was with a guy who did not speak my native language. I did not speak his language either, but he understood whatever I spoke for the most part. I did not mind because we mainly communicated in English. Even if I said something in my language, he was able to reply in English.

And yes, I would date someone who speaks Thai/Italian, provided they speak English. Because if not, i wouldn't be able to communicate with them at all.. and I like talking A LOT with my partner. I like learning about other cultures and languages. I would make an effort to learn at least the basics of his language. That’s the least I could do, especially if he takes me home to his family. I don’t want to just sit there awkwardly not knowing what to say next.

I'm trying to learn Hebrew and the vocabulary isn't hard to remember but the grammatical conjugations and word modifications and sequencing is a whole meal and one. But even English is difficult for me. I can communicate in basic words but when I try to write complicated ideas that you would find in a textbook I make many errors.

She would have to speak English because, unfortunately, I am monolingual. But I would love it if she spoke other languages as well. I find that admirable. It's even cute if she has a foreign accent. I've known but never dated girls with Irish, French, Italian and Icelandic accents.

I had a girlfriend in high school who spoke fluent Spanish because her parents owned a place on Rosarita Beach in Baja California and used to spend summers there. It was great going to Mexico with her.

In my 30s, I had a girlfriend who had been brought the U. S. from Germany as an infant by her mother. She had permanent residency but chose not to become a citizen. She spoke English all her life but also spoke fluent German.

Why would that be a problem? Wait- do you mean if they DON'T speak English, or otherwise share a language with you? That might be different. I'd actually find trying to build a pidgin interesting and kinda fun, but I think I'm rare in that, and in any case, it'd probably get rather frustrating when I just wanted to say something quickly.

I love it when someone is Bilingual but I do expect them to be able to speak a bit in the language that I understand otherwise we would just end up staring awkwardly at each other not knowing how to express to each other 😅

I only speak English and a little Spanish. If she speaks enough English for us to communicate like normal people, I really don't care what other languages she speaks. The more languages she speaks, the better. That means she's not a dummy. It might come in handy if we travel, but I don't plan on flying anywhere. I'm scared of planes.

I'm pretty sure I will end up dating someone who speaks a different language. However, I probably wouldn't date someone who speaks Thai since it would be hard for me to learn. As for Italian, well that would depend on many things...

If the also speak another language, that is great. But if their English is so poor that they have difficulty communicating, that would be a problem

Maybe? A language barrier is REALLY difficult for me personally. Communication is SO important and having the language barrier would make communication hard.
