What would you do after waking up and realizing that you won $980 million.

What I'd do tomorrow is call-in to work indicating that I will be out on personal business. Then I cash in the ticket making sure the money was in the bank.

But, after all the horsehit was over, that $980 million payment would likely be more like $500 million and I'd likely take it out as a lump sum and not spread out over 30 years since I am almost 63. So, let's say I take home after taxes $300 million...

That's a nice sum. Of course, I would retire. I'd leave almost all the money in highly secure investments like T-bills or something gaining interest so I could live off of the interest.

However, what I didn't put in the bank would be to pay-off my debts.

After that, plan on moving or upgrading my home/property by first buying my neighbor's house - and I don't give a shit what my wife says.

Frankly, I might just buy her off. Give her $10,000,000 and tell her to leave me alone. I'm moving out to my own home. (I'd move to my neighbor's house maybe.)

Ideally, I'd have a home built that was entirely off-the-grid and self-sufficient. I want to be left alone and not beholden to anyone else.

I would cash out and spend a bunch of money on my house, my two story, insulated, steel garage that has no interior yet, furniture, my 1/2 mile long gravel driveway, and my yard and veggie gardens.
I would upgrade my well to solar power with a backup generator.
I would put in a fire sprinkler system for the house and solar voltaic system since I live on 30 acres of oak grassland in northern California were fires are a threat.
I would get a large, backup generator for the house that ran off of propane since I already have a large propane tank.

I would hire someone part time to do landscaping, gardening and farming.

I would give my sister $1 million. My wife would probably give some of her relatives some money.

I would get a really good, 4WD truck, an ATV, and some sort of tractor with grader an back hoe attachments.

I would invest some money in gold and silver, including coins. And I would put the rest in my IRA to grow and use as desired.

It would not change my life very much because there's not much I want that I don't already have or have the ability to get if I wanted it, but I would want to help people as much as I could.

You can't trust charities anymore because they've all become tools of politicians that allow them to commit fraud and give huge kickbacks to the charity administration, so I would have to find a way to find people who need help and get cash to into their hands.

I recently saw a veteran's charity that said it would pay off the mortgages of widows of veterans who had been killed in action, which is great, but they wouldn't buy a house or give any help to widows who were renting. I was very offended by that.

It turns out the renters were in a much more precarious financial situation than the homeowners, but the charity treated the widows who owned homes as more worthy of help than the “mere renters.”

If I were able to give away money in gap-type situations like that where people get overlooked, it would make me very happy.
