The agency I work for has offered our team a trip to Australia. I’ve never been to Australia before, so I don’t have any personal experience there. That’s why I’d really like to hear from anyone who’s actually been—your real take on it would mean a lot. All things considered, how good of a decision is it to go traveling in Australia during this season?
Is traveling to Australia this season a good idea based on your experience?
Where most people live, we have a broadly a mediterranean climate. i. e. mild winters, except at elevation... and almost everything you are likely to see on a first trip is likely to be near the coast. Autumn, winter, spring is ideal. Mid-summer (your winter) can be oppressively hot at times and week-long spells around 105F do happen.
Do follow @nikki1989 advice and go to Melbourne. Arts, theatre, music, food, coffee. And I think Sydney is obligatory... the ferry across to Taronga Zoo or to Manly beach is worthwhile (and much nicer than the more famous Bondi Beach in my view).
Cities are generally safe for walking with reasonable judgment. You need to try hard to find a bad neighbourhood... mostly they are well out of the city centres that tourists frequent.
But try to get out of those two cities too if you have the time. Tasmania in the south has amazing terrain... hike Cradle Mountain or Wineglass Bay, try some of the world's better pinot noir. Or if you prefer go far north and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. If you have even more time, you may consider New Zealand too. 'Tramping' the South Island is particularly special, Milford Sound is a little Antipodean slice of fjordland.
Just bear in mind the distances between things can be vast. The country is basically the same size as the contiguous USA but with a population of 27 million, about 20 million of which inhabit 12 cities.
Oh... and try not to drown... we have a habit of doing that to tourists. Australia has some of the best, possibly the best, beaches in the world but they are outside the cities, can be rugged and to call them 'unpatrolled' would be a gross understatement... the nearest services could be 10km or more away.
Absolutely. I have been living in Australia since 2019, and it is by far the best country I have ever lived in, having lived in a few others. Come to Melbourne; it gets regularly voted as the world's best city for good reason.

Australia is usually a great idea, but “this season” depends on when you’re going and where:
- Dec–Feb (summer): Great for beaches (Sydney, Gold Coast), but hot and crowded; north can be very humid and wet. - Mar–May (autumn): My favorite—mild weather, fewer crowds, cheaper. - Jun–Aug (winter): Cooler in the south (nice for Melbourne/Sydney sightseeing), perfect for the Great Barrier Reef and the tropical north. - Sep–Nov (spring): Also excellent—good temps, lots of events and flowers.
If your agency is paying and timing is outside peak summer holidays, I’d strongly say: go. You’ll get stunning nature, clean cities, easy English communication, and generally safe, well-organized travel.
Well you have missed the summer and we are now in autumn. Melbourne - where I live - is down to low 20s mostly and a bit cold some days for a T shirt.
It does depend on where you will be going. Queensland is mostly high 20's. In the northern territory around 30. Perth around the same. Adelaide mid 20s.
heir seasons are the exact opposite to ours when it is winter here it can be blistering hot there. I went to Victoria, NSW and Queensland. In the north of Queensland the weather is sub-tropic, NSW is where Sydney is and you must be careful swimming or surfing in Sydney Harbour and listen for the shark sirens and get out of the water as they have bull sharks there that reach around 12 ft. in length, about 3 ft. in diameter and weigh 1200 lbs. or more. Victoria is where Melbourne is on the south coast and the rest of Victoria is largely country and farm land. You really need to be there at least 6 weeks to visit all of Australia, Perth which is in Western Australia is largely desert. Have fun I'd definitely go back. It's a shame to be on that side of the world and not visit New Zealand, especially the south island which has been compared to the garden of Eden.
