Apparently, Ireland isn't getting any American tourists anymore. According to reports, everyone from the States is now claiming to be Canadian, even going to the lengths of sewing Canadian flags on clothing.

Flag jacking isn't something new, Americans have been doing it for years and it's well known many English people claim to be Welsh or Scottish while on holiday.

I considered lying and telling people I was from Korea during a vacation to China because I could not read Chinese words and did not know how to interpret listed food prices at stores. If I tell them I cannot read Chinese words because I am from North America, they might assume I am rich and jack up their prices, but if I say I am from Korea, that will explain why I do not understand Chinese words, without making them think I am filthy rich and that they should over charge me extra for everything. I look Chinese, so nobody would believe me if I said I was from India or Africa. But Korea is believable.

No I’ve never pretended to be anything I’m not. I do feel like I lived up to the stereotype in England once. I was with a group of people at a table (not all of us American mind you) and the girl at the table next to us moved further away. I instantly thought loud Americans lol

The only time I "lie" is when I tell them my family is from Poland, and they say, "Oh, I love your windmills and tulips." I'm not gonna waste energy arguing with idiots.

I've also been mistaken for German, Russian and Brazilian. Just assuming and randomly talking to me in those languages. I didn't bother correcting them😂 My favorite was the Turkish guy on the bike who assumed I was Russian started cursing at me, "Your Pushkin shits on St. Nicholas!"🤣

No, I've never claimed to be anything but American. I don't advertise what country I'm from when visiting another country, but I will tell someone if they ask.

I have been incorrectly assumed I'm from another country though. You see, I try to adapt to whatever country I'm in. One time, I was staying at a hotel in London England, long time ago, and I needed to exchange some currency at the front desk. The woman at the desk asked for my passport, and was surprised to find that I was American. I had spoken to her several times, and she thought I was British.

Personally, I’ve never pretended to be from another country. I’ve found being honest, but respectful and low‑key, works best. Most locals respond more to your attitude than your nationality. No but a long time ago I was out with my trainer at a kind of like a club bar and he wanted me to act like I was from Sweden that I wasn’t from the USA that I couldn’t speak any English hardly. So I put on the Swedish accent and just rolled out a bunch of gibberish, I knew a little bit of Swedish. She was so excited hugging me and everything and Welcoming me to America. It was fun and it was funny. My trainer would talk to her in English and tell her what I said. That is very difficult to pull off and fool the average person. I was very nice to her and she seemed like she was really thrilled. That was a good entertaining experience. I’ve never done that before I had pulled it off. But I won’t do it again that was a long time ago Poppy. For some reason, I’m feeling guilty as I write this, but it was all in fun no harm done

and if they will speak to me in English or Spanish, and if they speak both... I answer with some Portuguese, lol

I have not... but I have met a few people from USA that masquerade as Canadians... I just ask them what a "double double" is and they reveal themselves pretty quickly. It even happens when traveling in Canada... seriously. So much for "USA USA" when traveling. .

I do this every time I travel to Europe. I pretend to be either Canadian or from some Pacific island that nobody's ever heard of. I don't claim to be American, even though I am, because the hostility toward Americans is palpable and unpleasant as hell, thanks to American foreign policy and most recently, our esteemed leader.
