Castles are just part and parcel of the landscape here. Today they're pretty to look at and it's nice for little kiddies to run around playing in them, but we mustn't forget they were instruments of suppression and the ground around them soaked in the blood of the slain.

True actual castles are awesome. Amazing construction that has endured the test of time. I love castles.


But hell no I wouldn’t want to live in one. Cold, damp, no plumbing or electricity nor would I want to add those things.

No, they are old, very large, difficult to heat and cool. They are horribly expensive to bring up to modern expectations of comfort. I would be much happier with a 100 square meter apartment in a city.

Living in a castle would be amazing for a while, especially in Europe—Scotland, Germany, or France. The history, stone walls, towers, and hidden staircases are incredible. 🏰

But full-time castle life might be cold, expensive, and a bit isolated. I prefer staying in restored castles as hotels: you get medieval vibes, great views, big halls, but with modern showers and heating. Perfect mix of adventure and comfort. ✈️

A lot are, but many have been well maintained and had modern features installed over the years. The bigger ones usually end up as hotels/wedding venues, but occasionally, a small affordable one comes on the market. Lots of them could easily be repaired and reused if it wasn't for conservation regulations.

@purplepoppy thank you for telling me that’s nice. I’ve seen some very old castles before there’s a real nice one in Puerto Rico I saw it while on vacation
