If you lost Google Maps, could you still navigate with a road atlas?

Without a doubt. I used to be an Animal Services Officer in Dallas and it was not uncommon to make 60 or more calls solo in an 8 hr shift using a Mapsco book. Ya gotta understand though, Dallas is a massive land sprawl, maybe an hours drive South to North and a little less West to East. Even after all those calls across the city there are areas I've never really been in much. And of course the old folding paper maps were the standard when I began driving (late 70's)> Piece O'Cake.

Absolutely. I did it for years when I worked in the field. When I got my assignments in the morning, I would use a road atlas to figure out the best routes and write them out out. It worked great.

I don't necessarily trust Google maps to give me the best routes. I usually use it when I get close to my destination to tell me when to turn and when I have arrived.

Atlases aren't detailed enough. You need unfoldable maps, or theose AA triptiks. Atlases give general ideas. Problem with phone GPS is it doesn't give you broader views and those confusing turn by turns. You can map out where you're going in advance. Turn by turn is too tight. Atlases too general. That's why road maps were created.

I think I would be able to. Given I am out in the country somewhat would be to my advantage since there are less roads. Highways would be super easy around here.

Now getting to a big city is no issue. Getting around in it might be for me.

Yes, you can absolutely navigate with a road atlas if you lose Google Maps. People did it for decades. You’d:
- Use the index to find cities or towns
- Follow major highways and numbered routes
- Note distances between points
- Watch road signs closely
- Mark your route with a pen

It’s slower and less precise in cities, but totally workable, especially on long road trips 🚗🗺️

I've actually never navigated with google maps. I know how to get around and across multiple states without GPS. The only thing I see google maps useful for when driving, is for finding restaurants and shit like that in unfamiliar cities. So if I drive to another state based on memory, but get there and want to grab a bite to eat, I might use something like google maps to local local businesses.

I would say so, I do not drive, but I have been asked to read maps before when our GPS was lost for a few years.

My mom was at home, babysitting our dying dog, and I was the only one available to read maps during our family road trip.

When it comes to traveling I have a GPS & if the GPS doesn’t work I go old school & breakout the paper maps.
