I have not been on a plane since before 9/11 but I used to be amazed that my luggage would always show up where it was supposed to , even if I had to change planes.
Arriving back to the local airport after a trip, waiting at the luggage carrousel I see a suitcase that looked JUST like mine only with a yellow ID tag as opposed to mine which had a black ID tag. It was the only one remaining on the carrousel. THAT meant that someone took mine and his was the one remaining on the carrousel. I was pissed off and waited hoping that whoever it was would notice it and come back. Sure enough a guy showed up with mine, and I walked up to him and looked at the airline's tag and sure enough it matched mine. I told him that was mine and his was likely the one on the carrousel. I took it from him and left the airport. He didn't look real bright but at least he noticed it before he left the airport.
I used to travel to the US for work regularly with 2 samples that were "Z" shaped and every time I would have a note in my luggage that Homeland Security had checked my bag. I didn't realize it until after a few times that they were packed in my bag in the shape of a swastika because that was the only way I could fit them in my suitcase.
I went on a 2 week cruise around the Mediterranean... it took them 12 days to get it to the ship, cruise was almost over...
@Calyptomaniac Interesting. There was a couple on our Mediterranean cruise a few years ago, where the husband's luggage got lost in transit, and didn't show up until the ship docked at its destination. For a few days, until they were able to buy some clothes at one of the major ports, they were washing what he was wearing and he was wearing some of her clothes.
I had to buy a few days worth too and do laundry on the ship a few times. They kept acting like it was impossible to get it somewhere we'd be in 2-3 days. It was a little ridiculous I thought.
A bag full of untaxed cigarettes went to a different city instead of to my hometown with me. A day later it was brought to me by a taxicab, unspoiled and still untaxed. 😬
It got lost for 3 days on the way to Turkey. When we finally got it, they locked it with some sort of device and gave no key or anything to open it. The hotel staff had to get tools and cut it open. I don't know why they would put a lock on it, and give us no way to open it🤦♂️
I lost my bullet shells at the military funeral that was handed to me by the military when I got back to Miami and opened my suitcase a couple days later it was gone the bullet shells out of my suitcase 😞
Two different times of flying with firearms to go to a hunt. The airport I was leaving the first was fine second time was horrible.
First time to pickup my firearm not bad, second they were rude because they had supposedly off loaded it first and were told I was the first one off the plane.
Definitely flying a different airline after all that BS.
Some stuff inside the luggage were damaged. Not odd, but that is all I can report.
I took someone else's luggage that looked just like mine by mistake. It took several days to rectify this problem. I only discovered the mistake when I got back to my hotel and opened the suitcase that I thought was mine and saw many clothes and I knew in fact were not mine.
I don't have any weird stories about luggage mishandling.
@OlderAndWiser You are older, wiser and one very lucky man. 😏
Maybe i should have kept my mouth shut and not perhaps jinxed us. My wife and i are going on an Alaska cruise next month.
Never had any issues with luggage when travelling.
My parents lost a bag and had it returned months later with their alarm clock but with a set of genuine Gucci sunglasses

My weirdest luggage story: I flew into Lisbon, but my suitcase decided it preferred… Oslo. Airline tagged it wrong. Two days later, it came back wrapped in Norwegian security tape, wearing someone else’s airport sticker and a bright orange “BIOHAZARD CHECKED” label. Inside was fine, but my socks smelled like strong airport disinfectant for a week.
