The odyssey is the best excuse for getting lost, but what would your excuse be?

It takes around 2 months to sail from Greece to the UK. It was a regular trip for Greek sailors in ancient times who came to buy tin.

But the Odyssey took 10 years. Now, no one is buying that angry God crap. It doesn't take that long just to bounce around the Mediterranean. They must have bumped into tons of other Greek boats who could have guided them home.

Now I know guys don't like asking directions, but come on, the Mediterranean is basically just a big pond and its full of ports you can stop off and get pointed in the right direction.

I call bullshit but we can do better, what would be your excuse?

We studied The Odyssey in high school. One of the things we did was offer an alternative to Homer's version of why it took him so long to get home. We decided it was a storm that originally blew him off course, and then he hooked up with some merchants, and got involved with a few wealthy women that made him not really wanting to go home to his wife.

That would be a boring story. Homer, the bard, who made his living telling stories, embellished the story by adding supernatural, weird creatures, and the like, to better please his audiences.

Hmmm... well lthere was the land of the lotus eaters. Some people spend an awful lot of time in opium dens... There's the Medusa angle... maybe she was practicing a sort of selective turning bits of them to stone, I mean a buncha sailors away from home for years? Some of 'em would probably have pet names for the individual serpent hairs. Besides, if returning home meant having to wade through all that mythological stuff wouldn't you drag your feet a bit?

The "Gods" excuse was a pretty good one given the superstitious idiots back in the day. You definitely don't want to tell people you spent 10 years getting drunk and laid in every port in the Mediterranean. "It was the will of the Gods" will save your ass every time.
