I live in Turkey, but honestly so many people act like Turkey = Istanbul and it's so annoying.

I was in Istanbul last week and actually explored it properly this time. What got me was how international it's gotten. I'd been before but 2026 felt totally different. In Fatih you hear Arabic everywhere, around Galata and Beyoğlu it's all Russian, and sometimes I literally heard zero Turkish lol.

Saw French, British, Spanish, Pakistani, Chinese, Japanese, Korean… everyone. At some point I was like "Wait, am I even in Turkey?" 😂 Feels like the whole world just lands there.

For a 3-day or week-long trip? Amazing. So much history, so much to see, proper adventure vibes. But living there? Nah. Even most Turks don't wanna live there permanently. It's way too crowded, traffic's a nightmare, and if you're not near the metro, getting around is hell.

If you like peace, trees, and breathing, Istanbul will drive you insane. Walking around the Grand Bazaar is literally fighting through human traffic 😂 Some people spend hours commuting every day. Couldn't be me.

For me Istanbul's a solid 10/10 for a week, but maybe 1/10 for long-term life.

And anyway Turkey's so much more than that. Antalya, İzmir, and tons of chill places in Anatolia are way better if you actually want a calm life. So many amazing spots all over the country.

That it's a Muslim country and there was a sex shop across the street from my hotel and condoms on my mini-bar menu, and women in thongs and extemely short shorts, and gays and lesbians on the street

I spent several days in Turkiye a few years ago, Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Troy. I guess I was pleasantly surprised by how big it is, and how modern it is. It's the first Muslim country I visited, and seeing all the mosques... It was a New experience for me.
