I'm actually disgusted by how people are reacting to this.

Let's just talk real quick about what happened. Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith's wife about her auto-immune disorder in front of millions of people on television, thousands of colleagues and coworkers and his family on the night he could potentially (and at this point Chris Rock might have already known) win an Oscar and it was all done while people are still talking about the allegations that she cheated.

One of these things on their own, wouldn't have warrented a slap, but there were so many levels of wrong here. It was entirely too disrespectful.

Will Smith has a reputation for being one of the nicest, most humble people in Hollywood. Chris Rock has a reputation for disrespecting and demeaning women, particularly black women.

Maybe will thought the joke was funny at first, but you can see him thinking about it before he went up.

Will went up there to say it's not OK to just do whatever you want. He showed that its not OK to have zero consideration for others. He went up there to tell Chris to act like a man.

Half the people on here practically want to kill themselves when someone tells them their 20 pounds over weight but Chris Rock calls Jada gi Jane 2 a few weeks after she went public with her disorder AND it was in front of his whole family. He just excluded them from everything.

If you got a problem with Will doing what he did you really need to re-think your moral compass because where both of them are from, a comment like that would have ended a lot worse.

Those two need to hug it out and move on.

To anyone saying Chris crossed the line, I don't care if someone cusses your dead grandma, you do not put your hands on them. There are better ways to handle situations, especially if you are a grown ass man with so much to lose. If homie had any bit of self-respect, he would've left that train wreck a long time ago, and if he didn't because he wanted to stay for the kids, then at least he would've dealt with the consequences of being with her, without lashing out physically on people who make jokes about her. I feel like this was just one big PR stunt for Will Smith his life behind the camera is getting so bad and he's still clinging on to remain relevant. He's already been humiliated by his family plenty of times in the media so he has nothing to lose and it's not the first time he's hit someone after being offended. I remember he hit a interviewer in the face once for trying to kiss him.

He knows he's got a good flim out right now and he's trying to keep the spot light on him. If it was real the police surly would have escorted him out and he wouldn't be aloud to carry in the award ceremony and be allowed to collect his award like he did. It was such a performance. I'll give it to Will he sure can act.

Everything you see in Hollywood is not as it seems and usually PR is running everything behind the scenes as someone whose worked with people in PR and has friends in the industry usually when something is going bad for a celebrity they'll try to do anything to get the attention on them even if it isn't good attention. Look at Paris Hilton she made a brand out of being a party girl who loved to do drugs and drink. Nothing the media loves more then a shit show

While I am definitely not above husbands slapping other men for defending their wives' honor, my only issue with this situation is that Will Smith shouldn't have done it on stage on live television, as people's reactions to the fiasco could result in Will Smith being seen in a negative light. Instead, he should have slapped Chris Rock when the show was over. On the plus side, Will Smith's slap did make the Oscars entertaining and memorable, as I honestly never had an interest in watching the Oscars in the first place. Will Smith already underwent a lot of hell and ridicule because of the "entanglement" that his wife had with another man in the past and clearly reached his breaking point with the jokes. Some people might think my opinion is tasteless, but so was Chris Rock's mouth after that slap. I'm sorry, but the whole thing was just hilarious to me.

I think Will Smith is not in a good place. He thought the joke was funny and was laughing at it, but obviously this got him in trouble with his wife. He changed his tune quickly. I think the slap had more to do with mollifying Jada than any sort of offense that was taken. This is a man who is dominated by his wife. She, for reasons of being an “empowered woman,” openly has affairs with other men, has publicly said her husband doesn’t satisfy him in bed, and expects him to be okay with this. And he says he is. Here are my thoughts. It was a distasteful and outright rude joke! He did deserve it and it was not fake or part of the show. Sadly, it also shows Mr. Smith's arrogance and anger management issues. To confront him on stage like this was very inappropriate and the Oscars need to do something about it! It has been reported that LAPD asked the Rock if he would press charges and he said no. I do feel the Rock needs to apologize to Mr. Smith and his wife as well as the Oscars and public. Mr. Smith should lose his award!

It seems like a pretty fake and planned thing. Will Smith is a great natural actor and the Oscars have been on the decline for years, you need something to talk about the award. Therefore, it was probably agreed.

I analyze the thing for what it is. The moment "a joke (horrendous imho) I respond with a slap" does nothing but legitimize the slap as a response to the word. It is a thing of a huge gravity. Because it gives reason to those we later call "monsters" when they give us a slap, when violence touches us closely. When we talk about free speech, we are referring to this in particular. Smith's is an assault on a person who is, by the way, paid to tease you.

If it wasn't planned and there was no contract to do it. Furthermore, he should be prosecuted and convicted of assault. Since the thing was broadcast worldwide and the aggression is obvious. As far as I'm concerned, Smith should lose the Oscar he won and should no longer be cast.

I genuinely don't know how to feel about it... It was very uncomfortable to watch, on that we can all agree.

I believe we should be able to joke about everything if the intention isn't to hurt someone/a group or push your political agenda... If you say something offensive and there's some truth to it according to the speaker, it becomes mockery.

But Will has the right to stand up for his wife. Was slapping Chris warrented? I don't know, nor can I say how I'd react in Will's position... What matters here is that for Will it was justified, and his wife definitely didn't appreciate the joke either.

I saw it through a YT video by some Australian comedian called Isaac Butter (something).

I was f*cking shocked.
