It's so incredibly sad... Gun violence isn't normal in Japan, when he heard the first shot that missed him he must have thought it was something innocent because he stood around and that's when he was shot a second time, fatally..

He was 67.

It's shocking especially in a country like Japan, although looking back at the recent country's history it's not the first time that a high-profile political figure gets publicly assassinated.

He was an hardline conservative and drew criticism for his denial of Imperial Japanese war crimes; but at the same time promoted a policy of dialogue and cooperation with all the powers in the Asian setting, including the ones with whom Japan has the most difficult relations, China and the DPRK; so I can't see valid motivations for his killing. The man who did it was a former maritime police officer, and from what is emerging about him he had mental issues and employment problems.

Update - it's seen the clearly that the second shot is the one that hit. Kudos to the guys (maybe bodyguards?) who jumped the shooter, if a second too late, while the policeman just stands there and looks.

His whole protection was a joke... I don't care if they aren't used to violence there, they are there for a reason and MUST be prepared for anything. If they had covered him from the very first bang he may very well be alive still.

Surprised. I was supposed to check on the reports from the anime-world that the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! (a series I wasn't too into, but was iconic in my youth nonetheless), when report of the assassination-attempt on Japan's ex-P. M. was announced on Tokyo's state-media N. H. K., and ended-up watching the broadcast live for a few hours while working. On break, I was still finalizing my post on the assassination-attempt, when the livestream announced his death.

Obviously, I'm not happy about it, but apparently it's better than what the assassin was originally planning: assassination by explosives.

Japan has one of the best cultures and strictest rules on gun ownership. This is proof that no matter how great of a culture you create and no matter how many smart laws you pass, there will always be bad people that break these laws.

Yes but thanks to their strict laws, violence like this rarely happens. Plus, thanks to their gun laws again, the shooter wasn't able to access an actual gun. He had to fabricate a makeshift weapon... not like it made much difference but ya know.

This is analogous to the JFK/RFK Assassinations. In Japan, Abe was all about reforming Japan and dragging it into the modern world. He wanted to crown his 'reign' by hosting the Japanese Olympics. Sadly, he was ill, and then he botched the handling of the pandemic. Unfortunately, he was robbed of opportunity to complete his mission. Another icon's life that was cut down too soon. It will be hard to replace him.
